You guys talk about blog plagiarism...
Here in Asia we have huge amounts of academic plagiarism.
And unfortunately since our scholars pay huge sums of money to overseas Western universities that can't seem to secure government funds no matter how good they are - those universities are forced to depend on those overseas plagiarist scholars, and send them right back here to lord it over us at wages they don't deserve, to posts and jobs they don't deserve and with powers they will surely abuse.
That said, I still find the Western model good - i.e. even if a teacher hates a students' guts, they will attempt to mark course and test-work fairly and the student can argue for his marks.
Not the case here in Asia.
Good luck with your anti-plagiarism drive.
Sad Asian.

Darren, you give some great food for thought, no pun intended. I created a post talking about this today after reading your article on the topic. One thing came to mind; it might be good practice to spell out the copyright on a site or blog. If a link from the site, maybe a page or a link from the copyright symbol actually laid out what the owner of the site does and does not allow, it might help. Many people are just ignorant of the law and with different countries having different laws it can be somewhat confusing, although I think universal standards apply in most cases.

I remember that when I had the copyright spelled out for clients, something I did after being a victim, the copyright infringement of my works pretty much stopped, as far as I could tell. It might just be a ‘Best Practices” as blogging becomes more popular and more companies come online with ‘for profit blogs.’

Off create a copyright page for my blog….

How about quoting pieces of reviews from websites you have an affiliate relationship with? I see that Darren quotes from reviews frequently. If I'm an Amazon Associate, and I'm sending them traffic, do I have to get their permission to quote a piece of a review?

Thank you for the information. I'm currently dealing with a company who is taking my RSS feed and republishing it in a way that suggests it to be there own. My site is lenderama.com. The offending site is mortgage-calculator.tv/mortgage_insider.html . I found the site on the 25th, contacted them, posted about them, and a week later, it's still up. They call the page the "Mortgage Insider" and even display a copyright. With so much concern over bloggers plagiarizing web sites, I'm experianceing the opposite.

Interesting & imp post. There should be more awareness on this as many arent even aware of the fact that to 'plagiarize' is an offence.
Darren, your tips are great as always and wish you a wonderful and safe NEW YEAR!

Nice and important topic here. Do you happen to know if that fella from freemoneyfinance.com ask for permission because he takes a whole chunk of information off of other web pages.

Good overview.
What I wonder about is how the search engines treat the duplicate content that results from plagiarism. For example, if someone copies one of your pages in it's entirety, will the original source be filtered out of the search index?

The quoting of that small text was also legal if it wasn't in the public domain. It's a direct quote with source. Falls under fair use.

Thanks for clearing some of those issues up. I know that many bloggers, me included, link to other blogs and quote them without actually asking. Although most blogs would like another link, asking them still is the right thing to do.
