Three simple actions that doubled my website traffic in 30 days

The following post on how to increase website traffic was submitted by Adrian W Kingsley-Hughes.

I started the PC Doctor blog in May of 2005 and for the first few months my traffic was really low - down in the few hundreds of visitors a day. It was pretty depressing I can tell you and there were times when I thought about quitting.  I knew that the site was in the Google ’sandbox’ and so I either had to keep on plugging at it until it was out or I had to give up.

Fortunately, I decided to keep on posting but in the interim I decided that I was also going to do my utmost to drive traffic to my site manually until Google kicked in. I took a look around at what some of the successful blogs were doing and came up with three tactics that helped to double my website traffic in a month.

  1. First, I made the most of Technorati tags.  I tagged every key word in each of my posts. Initially I did this manually but them I discovered a WordPress plugin called SimpleTags that made the job a whole lot easier.

I found that by tagging my post effectively they were getting a lot more attention then their untagged counterparts, and as an added advantage I was getting focused, quality traffic to the site!

  2. I leveraged my existing website.  I’ve been running my business website for a few years and that was getting modest levels of traffic that was relevant to my blog - so why not try to drive some of that to my new blog! I placed a few FeedBurner headline animator blocks on some of my most popular pages and after a day or so I noticed a significant increase in traffic for 5 minutes worth of work on my part.
  3. Finally, I made effective use of trackback links to popular sites. If I commented on a post on another site I would make sure that I set up the appropriate trackback for it. The results from this are varied depending on the site and post that you are linking to but since I liked to comment and interact with the wider blogosphere anyway, it was free traffic!

Using these three simple techniques, I took The PC Doctor blog from a few hundred hits a day into the thousands in less than 30 days. This kept my interest in the site until it came out of the Google sandbox and I started to receiver some serious traffic. However, I’m convinced that these actions I took at the early stages have helped me create a loyal and targeted readership that continues to benefit my blog today.

  • How do you “tag” words in posts? (My blog is on Typepad, so don’t think I can install any plug-ins.)

  • The reason I don’t like tagging very much is that visitors when they finish reading your posts click on the technorati tags instead of Adsense, Amazon link or whatever money making links you have.

  • How do you do trackbacks? I see those, but don’t understand them.

  • Normally, a blog will list their trackback somewhere near the end of a post. You can (usually) copy and past the URL of the trackback into your post editor. In WordPress, when you create a new post, there is a field to include a trackback URL. Just paste it in there.

  • Incidentally I have implemented Technorati tags and trackback techniques on my blog http://www.pakquake.com and it got on top of SEs pretty quickly.

  • I use a free service Haloscan for trackback services in Blogger. Have a look at the end of any post on my blog.

  • Louis, you don’t have to display Technorati tags. I don’t. They are only in my feeds, where pretty much only Technorati sees them.

  • Good stuff, I’ve just installed the tag plugin-

  • Hi IOerror, Do you use the plugin http://vapourtrails.ca/wp-keywords to have your tags just in the feeds or something else ?

  • IO Error, how did you put the Technorati tags in your feeds only?

  • Theres a great tutorial for users of Blogger, Firefox, Deli.icio.us, and Technorati here:

    http://ecmanaut.blogspot.com/2005/11/blogger-delicious-categorizer-script.html

  • Louis: can’t you then hide the DIV with tags using CSS? Is this acceptable by Technorati and other tag search engines?

  • Some very sound advice. I’m still having troubles getting my head around trackbacks though. I gather that when you write a post relating to an article on another blog, you can insert a trackback to it.

  • Thanks for the tips, I’m going away this week but will try them next year. Thanks for explaining trackbacks Todd, never really understood them until now.

  • […] I discovered a wonderful plugin over at ProBlogger. It’s called SimpleTags, and it’s making my life a whole lot easier. Up until now, I’ve been typing the html for each Technorati tag in by hand, which meant that I wasn’t adding all that many tags, since I am very lazy. And if you don’t tag, nobody except your regular subscribers will have any idea you said anything. Now I can tag practically every word in a post with almost no effort. Thank you, Broobles! […]

  • I also appreciate the tips and look forward to trying at least one, starting with the Technorati tags. I’ve had problems understanding how to include them on my site, but I’ll give it a try this weekend.

  • I congratulate you for having such a successful blog! Not only are your links better than some of the random ones generated in Google Searches, but your tips actually work, compared to the other “optimization” sites that have 3 Adsense blocks and a couple of sentences repeating google’s tips.

  • thanks for the tips. I didn’t quite know about it, but plan to use it soon.

  • At the moment I’m using a heavily modified version of the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin. It’s heavily modified because UTW doesn’t support Atom feeds, and Technorati prefers Atom feeds.

I’ve been meaning to get around to writing a simple tag plugin that doesn’t have every feature but the kitchen sink, and just plain does its job, but I’ve been so busy blogging… :)

  • Oô … No offense to anyone but I find it quite amazing that some readers of this blog, i.e. people you would say they are probably blog aware to say the least, still don’t know about technorati or trackbacks …

  • Hi. Those that wanna use technorati tag and make it invisble, all you have to do is delete part of the code in the simpletags.php file. I did it to my site http://hyipfarm.com .
The tags are invisible now and technorati can still detect them.

You have to delete 3 stuff

    Step1
    In the simpletags.php file find
    $pre_replacement = ‘Technorati Tags: ‘;
    and change it to
    $pre_replacement = ‘ ‘;

    Step 2
    Find . trim($ttags[$i]) .
    delete it.

    Step 3
    Find . $ttags[$i] .
    delete it.

Enjoy! No more worry that people will go away from your site from clicking those tags.

  • sorry wrong link. the link to my blog is at
    http://hyipfarm.com/blog

  • The categories of Wordpress are the same as tags for Technorati. So if you post them under the right categories, Technorati will pick them up correctly.

  • forgot to mention on thing:
    - you need to open an account for Technorati
    - make sure Technorati is pinged after posting, use for posting: http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping

no plugins are really needed to trigger Technorati other than the standard functionality of Wordpress.

  • While you might not “need” a plugin to trigger Technorati, in Wordpress, by default, the only tags applied to an article are the pre-defined “categories” that you check off when you post it. Now you could go in and add a category corresponding to each of the tags you feel an article might merit, but I think that’s a lot of work, and then you have this huge categories list that would quickly become rather unwieldy.

Take the blog post I wrote about this post. One of the tags I applied to it (using this very plugin, in fact ), was “ProBlogger”. Now I thought that was very relevant for this one post. But am I ever going to tag another post “ProBlogger”? I suppose it’s possible, but I certainly wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of setting up a category called “ProBlogger”. Plus then “ProBlogger” would have shown up in the list of Categories in my sidebar, which might have looked a little strange. I could type in the html by hand, of course, and that was what I was doing before I found this plugin, but I notice that I didn’t add as many tags per post, again because I am lazy. I might not “need” this plugin, but I”m certainly finding it very useful.

  • Yes, Holly Ward you are right. If you want to add tags you probably never need again again, such a plugin works better. And I do believe that plugin is great.

  • […] I’ve really been trying to keep things a little more positive here but every so often something gets under my skin and I gotta call a spade a spade. I’ll start off by saying I’m a regular reader of Darren Rowse’s Problogger and I respect and value his work there. Darren’s on vacation and having some guest bloggers write columns for him. Yesterday I noticed this post Three simple actions that doubled my website traffic in 30 days. After reading it I wrinkled my nose a bit but let it slide. Later I noticed it had made it’s way to digg and was tagged by people in Del.icio.us and to be honest the way people were tripping over themselves to fawn over this was actually completly ridiculous. To prove my point lets take a look at the three suggestions: […]

  • Hi, Excellent article

I’ve got the HTML for Feedburner Headline animator blocks.
How do i insert the HTML into my signatures?
    I use Thunderbird & Outlook

    regards

  • I just use ecto, and that makes it simple as pie :)

  • Adrian, I just looked at your traffic chart on Alexa.com and I must say that it is quite impressive.

I too was concerned about the technorati tags directing traffic away from my site. Thanks to the previous posts for the tips on how to make the tags invisible on your site.

  • Ok, so I love the tagging, but I tried the trick so that the tags don’t show up (I’m not worried about people following links to leave my site, but I don’t like the visible clutter) and it just flat out did not work.

    Anyone got any other suggestions?

  • TEX: You can hide it with CSS. Wrap your tags in <DIVgt; with id, for example…
    <div id=”tags”&gt….</div>
then add style for tags to your CSS file:
    #tags { display: none; }

  • I tried the trick from HYIP farm but it didn’t work. Anyone else has been able to get it to work, seems like a great solution.

Happy new year you all by the way

  • thanks for the tips. pretty cool to find someone who’s so wlling to help others out.

  • I’ve got two bookmarklets that make adding tags to the ends of your posts very easy at http://marshallk.com/bookmarklets

That said, I sure hope people are going to limit their tagging to subjects that the posts are honestly about. The last thing I want to have to deal with is tag spam, and that’s totally on its way isn’t it?

I’ve been “tagging” or adding keywords or categorizing my sites for ages - little if any traffic ever comes from technorati and technorati seldom shows accurate activity on any of my blogs.

  • How do you tag words in Drupal ?

  • In response to Dawn’s question:

    How do you do trackbacks?

There is a WordPress Trackback Tutorial (could be helpful for other blogging platforms, but geared toward WordPress users).

I also have to agree with Clark - mileage may vary. There have been many complaints on Technorati not properly indexing sites or displaying accurate links.

While I can’t say I have any complaints about Technorati, I have noticed that some sites receive quite a bit of traffic from them while others seem to be missing completely.

And, for those who want to make their technorati tags disappear, wrap them in a specific <div> element and apply a bit of CSS ingenuity.

    example:
    <div class=”tech-tags”>Add Technorati Tags</div>
    in CSS file:
    .tech-tags {display: none;}

Hope that helps someone out :)

  • I am the web designer for a property company based in Bangkok. At the beginning of the year I implemented the strategy you so rightly put forward above, using WordPress and including the Technorati tags. The site now has five times the number of hits! I would like to thank you for the advice given. It has been so successful I have also implemented a similar programme for a consultancy company in the UK who outsource all of their their SEO work to us. Their site was only put live yesterday so I cannot gauge its success as yet, but we are both highly confident that this is the way to deliver SEO strategies to our clients. We have abandoned our link building strategies since the Jagger update and now concentrate on content augmentation and article writing, with great results. Once again, thanks.

  • […]   What do I do now? So you’ve been inspired to start a blog, you believe the ROI messages from Part 2, Part 3 has helped you choose a platform, but now what?  This section gives you some guidance on the key things you need to do to make this a success, and points you to plenty of resources that will help. First, you’ve got to get the purpose of this new blog clear in your mind.  You might be selling something specific, or you might be taking an indirect approach and promoting your expertise in a particular area so that potential clients like what they hear, want to work with you and check out your company.  You might be sharing expertise around your organisation, or you might be using the medium to connect directly with your customers.  Whichever it is, get that vision clear in your mind. Next, give the blog a theme.  It might include your musings and rants, but give it an identity around something that you’re passionate about.  There is an enormous amount of content out there, and you need to make yours worthy of people’s attention.  That will happen if yours gets mixed with your enthusiasm and passion.  Get a domain name of your own.  Blogger and TypePad domain names are OK, but you wouldn’t start your company site on Geocities would you?  In any case, you will almost certainly want to switch platforms at some point, and this will be easier if you’ve got your own address.  Get in to the habit of writing and set aside some time every day, or week.  If you want your site to get noticed, you need to feed it, so it can feed the audience and the their news aggregators.  Cross post and comment on as many sites as you can.  Make sure your site is easy to access, with RSS feeds, Atom, or a subscription option, or all of these.  Have a blogroll of blogs you read and people you like.  There is an interesting rule in blogging - the more you send them away, the more they’ll come back.  So the more you connect with other bloggers, the more they’ll connect with you, and that will improve your ranking.  And the topic that seems to be missed by so many bloggers - apply the rules of Search Engine Optimisation.  In simple terms you want to get noticed by the search engines.  That is more likely to happen if your blog titles aren’t esoteric or clever, but say what the topic is about with the appropriate keywords.  Your post should have those key words peppered around in prominent places.  That, combined with the links you’ll manage to get from those other bloggers who are wiser and more popular than you will enhance your page rank in Google, and bring more traffic to your site.  The good news is that there are plenty of advisers out there to help you.  Here are some: Dennis Howlett’s take on the do’s and don’ts for an accounting practice.  Darren Rowse is the problogger from Australia.  He writes half a dozen successful blogs, and has plenty of advice for the more directly commercial blogger.   Here’s a selection from him: 18 Lessons I’ve Learnt about Blogging Three simple actions that doubled my website traffic in 30 days Social Bookmarking - Getting your Blog Noticed Search Engine Optimization Articles and Resources   Take a look at Aaron Brazzell’s “The Blogger’s Primer“.   • Tags definatly seem hard to grasp, least the part about where to put them on the page. I have 3 questions then;
    1. Is it better to have one word tags or is 2 words acceptible
    2. Does the tag have to appear in the RSS feed?
    3. Does it affect you to have tags that do NOT point to technorati? Like for example, a tag that points to your own categories on your blog (using the rel=”tag”)?
    john

  • Like I stated before: categories in WordPress are exactly the same as tags. Technorati has updated their information about this recently:
    http://www.technorati.com/help/tags.html

In Wordpress 2 it’s possible to add categories on the fly while creating a new post. I think this is a better system than any plugin I have seen. Because categories can not be redundant and can be renamed, it’s cleaner than specifying tags per post.

I don’t understand the confusion myself but it’s probably because categories and tags are different words :)

  • In Wordpress [sic] 2 it’s possible to add categories on the fly while creating a new post. I think this is a better system than any plugin I have seen. Because categories can not be redundant and can be renamed, it’s cleaner than specifying tags per post.

Yes, Technorati will use the category name as a tag in WordPress, but tags and categories are two different things.

What happens when you only create a single entry on a specific subject? Or if your entry covers a number of subjects that may not warrant having a completely new category created (on the fly or otherwise) for it?

Think of tags as meta filing without needing to clutter your sidebar with unnecessary categories.

Lorelle has a nice run down of what the difference between tags and categories are for anyone interested.

  • I would like to thank the author. Of all the advice I have read this is the most valuable to me.

I came in late for the FIFA World Cup only updating my site a week before the events with almost me as the visitor. I followed these three steps and I ended up the month of june with an average of around 500 - 600 readers and some it even went up to 1500 depending on which post I trackback to.

Cool man… I have read this post way way back but only got the time to put the plugin, find sites that have great traffic to trackback to.

Come to think of it, I have not done the feedburner tip yet coz I only signed up a week ago for that service and I will hook up in one of my decent traffic sites and I would expect more readers coming in.

  • For someone who has been blogging for years, you tend to think you know everything when starting over. Unfortunately the blinders are usually on when starting over. These 3 simple tips have increased my traffic to my professional blog http://russell.ackner.com already - within the first week.

  • I’m new to the blogging world, and I’ve been looking for ways to create trackbacks when I post to my site (http://www.lucasmcdonnell.com). While the tips posted above are extremely helpful, I have yet to come across a really simple, step-by-step approach to how to properly create and manage trackbacks.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Darren’s site is always useful & informative. I hadnt thought of adding tags to help improve website traffic. I plan to go back & add tags to all my posts (manually since I have typepad) and see if it helps - or based on others comments, see if it directs traffic away. Time will tell. Thanks for an informative site.

  • Great article , I am looking forward to trying them out on my blog at http://www.freeebooksonline.blogspot.com

  • Wow this really helped. I hopefully can get more people to my site which needs more hits badly.

    Written very well.

  • Really cool article, I will start doing that… thanks a lot.

  • Wow!!! Good job. Could I take some of yours triks to build my own site?

  • Decent tips but the advice to hide the tags with display none seems shady and unimportant, just div position absoulte and locate the tags to the side or in the footer section for each post, nobody will click off your site as they are away from the article and not tempting to click and not hidden with shady display none.

  • Tips #1 and #3 are fine, but I just don’t see how they can possibly substantially increase traffic if you don’t have much to start with. I think tip #2 is the real deal, but if you don’t have another sucessful web site to leverage, I guess you’re screwed.

I’ve been running a blog for about a month now, and I tried all the above (except leveraging another web site, since I don’t have one).
Right now, my traffic is so pitifully low its embarassing. Above you say you were depressed when your traffic was in the low hundreds. Imagine having far lower than that. What I want to know is, how did you start with that much traffic to begin with? I check everything every day in Google Analytics. Technorati brings in only 2-4 hits a day, sending trackbacks and leaving my sig when commenting on other sites (and if I really hustle) only brings in 6-12 hits or so. Search engines bring in about 10 hits a day.

And feedburner, atom, rss, etc. I admit I don’t understand all the differences fully yet, but doesn’t someone need to go to your site first before they’re going to subscribe to your feed? In any case, no one has signed up for mine yet as far as I can tell.

I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on my site, but few people find it. (About 50% of my traffic is direct) I even tried Ad words and Blog ads, and they worked, but only while the ads were running, and in the end I was spending about 1 dollar in advertising for every 4 hits I was bringing in, not a great ratio. And since my site is not commercial, I’m not going to spend a huge amount on advertising. I tried everything else, announcing the site to friends and family, leaving my sig when commenting in google groups, registering with every search engine service, using Digg and Reddit, exchanging links with others, etc. If anyone has any other suggestions, I’m all ears. Help!

  • I’ve tried it and it hasn’t worked

  • Yes, they are right… Most of my blog visitors will click the tag instead of adsense. My adsense revenue greatly drop down… Thinking whether is there any way to change the placement of tag…

  • This one makes sence “One’s first step in wisdom is to kuesstion everything - and one’s last is to come to terms with everything.”

  • Thanks for this, I think I’m gonna do some experiments with trackbacks and tagging and see how much of an effect it has (if done right I assume).

  • Ha ha. You only had hundreds of readers, Louis? I still only receive about ten page views per day. So it sounds like you were doing pretty well, especially when you compare yourself to me.

  • WOW! You see it just goes to show how 3 simply ways that were staring you in the face can easily DOUBLE your website traffic. It’s like a butterly effect, small actions make for big responses…

  • There are many advantages of your web blog above a website, except it’s easy to setup and free. You can put every thing in your blog: from a couple of lines what it is on your mind or your new article just published elsewhere, or a product review. In principle, a blog is the same as a website, but you will need to update more frequently to get the visitors to your site. A major advantage of your web blog here above a website to getting major search engines like Google and Yahoo to visit your blog frequently is a technique called “pinging”. It’s a method of notifying all of the major search engines and blog directories, each time that you have updated your blog. The search engines will come and to take a look at your blog, thereby increasing traffic to your blog. If you link your blog, the search engines will follow the links from the blog pointing to your sites. This will help the search engine rankings of your sites as well!

  • thanks for the advice

consider this my effective use of trackback!

  • If you want to achieve a high ranking on Search Engines, quality content text is essential. However, the Search Engines must be able to read the text, meaning that the text must be in HTML and not graphic format.

  • HI ..PLS HELP ME ON HOW TO INCREASE TRAFFIC ON MY WEBSITE..HOW TO PUT AN EFFECTIVE META TAGS..IM JUST EARNING A MAXIMUM OF 2 $ A DAY FOR MY ADSENSE

  • Take a look at a new approach to boost web site traffic: http://www.jointeffort.com. In essence, this is incorporating a large social community application onto your web site. Joint Effort is a complete turnkey solution that allows partner sites to instantly create an active online social community on their own web resources under their own branding, link it to an existing database of users, and thus increase their web site traffic and profits. Visitors of your site receive an additional reason to return again and again: to socialize via the social network, and therefore they will spend more time on your site, not to mention inviting their friends and new friends they have made.

  • There’s many links to my website but very little google traffic. Somehow I must’ve ruined by google pagerank.)

  • This is the exactly the kind of information I have been looking for. It seems like whenever I google ‘website traffic’ all I get is people trying to get their hands on my money with what I would suggest might be unproductive results. As a new website owner, it may take me a while to wrap my head around what I have to do - but I will start looking around now. A sincere thanks.

  • My google traffic is so off-an-on, and my rank keeps changing. It’s impossible to figure out what is working and what is not.

  • I have been trying to get my site, http://www.artcitadel.com, to increase traffic for a few days now. It seems that even though all the content is original google does not love it :( Will try some of these suggestions.
