A backlink is an incoming link to a blog or website, originating at another website. Google also counts internal links, from the blog archives to the main home page, for example as backlinks.

A severe weakness of the Google backlink shuffle is the fact that Google only displays a small sampling of the total links. Another weakness is the fact that Google publicly displays ancient history (in Google terms anyway).

All incoming links to a blog are counted by Google and given credit. They are not all displayed on the Google toolbar readout, however.
