What is a Blog?
So what is a Blog anyway? I am asked every week via emails, conversation and Instant Messaging chats to define: ‘what is a blog’. If you’re reading this you may well be asking the same question.
There are a number of ways I could answer this question ranging from the broad to the highly technical.
Before I define the ‘what is a blog’ question – here are a few definitions from other much wiser people to get us started:
‘A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.’ Source
‘A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.’ Source
‘From “Web log.” A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.”‘ Source
‘A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there’s also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc.’ Source
‘A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.’ Source
‘A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog or web log. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called “blogging”. Individual articles on a blog are called “blog posts,” “posts” or “entries”. A person who posts these entries is called a “blogger”. A blog comprises text, hypertext, images, and links (to other web pages and to video, audio and other files). Blogs use a conversational style of documentation. Often blogs focus on a particular “area of interest”, such as Washington, D.C.’s political goings-on. Some blogs discuss personal experiences.’ Source.
So What is a Blog???
Confused yet? Don’t be – its really quite simple. To put it as simply as possible – a blog is a type of website that is usually arranged in chronological order from the most recent ‘post’ (or entry) at the top of the main page to the older entries towards the bottom.
Have a look at the main page of my blog at here for an example. for a different example you might like to look at this one (another of mine).
Ok – now you are a seasoned blog reader – you’ve seen two already at least.
Blogs are usually (but not always) written by one person and are updated pretty regularly. Blogs are often (but not always) written on a particular topic – there are blogs on virtually any topic you can think of. From photography, to spirituality, to recipes, to personal diaries to hobbies – blogging has as many applications and varieties as you can imagine. Whole blog communities have sprung up around some of these topics putting people into contact with each other in relationships where they can learn, share ideas, make friends with and even do business with people with similar interests from around the world.
Blogs usually have a few features that are useful to know about if you want to get the most out of them as a reader. Lets examine a couple briefly.
Archives – You might look at the front page of a blog and think that there is not much to them. A few recent entries, some links to other sites and not much else. However its worth knowing that there is a lot more going on under the surface that might initially meet the eye. For example in addition to the main page of this blog – at the time of writing this post there are over 520 other pages or posts below the surface that I’ve written over the past few months.
When I write a post like this one it goes to the top of the front page. As it gets older and as I add more current posts it begins its journey down the page until it disappears from it. This is not the end of its life however, because it goes into the ‘Archives’ of my blog. It sounds like a dusty dark place but its really just like a filing cabinet that is easily accessible in a couple of ways. You can read my ‘archives’ simply by looking on the ’sidebar’ (over on the left of this blog) at the ‘archives’ or ‘categories’ section. There you will see links to all my old posts which you can access either by category. You’ll see a category for ‘Advertising’ – click that link and you’ll see all my old posts on the topic of Advertising with the most recent at the top and the oldest at the bottom.
Comments – Not all blogs use comments – but most do. This blog is not a monologue but a conversation. You can give me feedback on almost everything I write simply by clicking the ‘comments’ link at the bottom of each one of my posts. This will take you to a little form where you leave your name, email and a link to your own blog if you have one as well as your feedback, comment, critique, question, essay on why you love my blog, promise of money…. etc). Try it now. Scroll to the bottom of this page, click ‘comments’ and fill in the blanks with a little introduction to yourself.
A great way to learn about blogs is to read a few. Leave some comments, ask questions and bookmark your favourites. An even better way to learn about blogs is to start your own. Ok – you might be laughing at me now – you think you are not web savy enough to have your own site? You wouldn’t know where to start? You don’t know how?
My Secret
Let me share a secret with you – three years ago I knew nothing about blogs, I had never used the internet for anything more than email, surfing and chatting to friends and I could only barely do any of that! But one day I discovered a blog and after surfing from one to another (blogs tend to link up to other blogs a lot) for a few hours I was hooked and wanted to start my own. I found that there are free blog services that almost anyone could set up in a matter of minutes. Really it is that simple. Literally millions of people blog from around the world. Its not just something for young people, or geeks, or cool folk, or Westerners, or even for people with their own computers – instead its something virtually anyone with access to a computer and the internet once or twice a week can start up.
Are you still confused? Would you like more information? Below are a few helpful articles on the topic – there are many more on the web – just do a search on your favourite search engine. Otherwise shoot me an email using my ‘contact’ button with your question and I’ll do my best to get back to you.
Update: If you’d like to start a blog I’ve written a book – ProBlogger the Book – which is specifically written for new bloggers. I hope you find it helpful.
- Rebecca Blood has written a helpful history of blogging for those who are interested in learning more about the blogging evolution over the past few years.
- Harvard Law has a helpful article titled What makes a Weblog a Weblog

Blogs are probably one of the best formats for personal websties. Depending on which blog software you use, there isn’t much in way of HTML knowledge required and you can be up and running within minutes. I would have given anything for WordPress back in my early days when I kept a site about X-Files the series. :)

Wow. Three years ago I knew more about the Internet than the great Darren Rowse? Interesting. Yeah, blogs are pretty simple to set up. Sometimes I wish they were a bit more technical though. It makes it easier to set up splogs.

Hello. Your “blogs” have been so informative! You seemed so personable that I am even doing as you ask, and leaving a “comment”. :)
I have been studying websites for the past month, am thinking about going with SBI web host, and am planning to do a site and a blog per month for a total of 10.
I am 68 and have to work fast, considering that I only have 20 years left! Anyway, thank you so much for your site (linked from Lynn Terry’s site); I have learned so much reading your blogs.
No need to answer me – I know you are so busy – but enjoy the read. Char

Hi Darren, It’s only today that I discovered your blog with plenty of information to read. For some time I have been thinking of making my website, weblog just like so many people do. I followed a link to your website from an email I received from SANS.ORG. My field is information security and I’d heard that you were the recent victim of a distributed denial of service attack (DDOS). I was curious to find out why a blogger would be a victim of such an attack. I was expecting to find a site with a lot of political ranting and vitriol for content and I’m delighted to discover instead an excellent primer on blogging. Apparently your success has earned the wrath of some envious fools. Best of luck and I hope they catch the bastards.

I have been blogging since 1/1/06 after receiveing an email from John Reilly at Internet Crusade asking me to do so. Saul Klein, John Reilly and Mike Barnett are the internet gurus of the real estate industry and were starting up a blog product.
Everything I know about the internet, I know from their listserv, Real Talk, which I have participated in since 1998. So I immediately agreed.
As you say, blogs lead to blogs lead to…and within 10 days or so I received an email from Dustin of RainCityGuide.com asking me to be a “Frequent Contributor” of their site.
The Real Town Internet Crusade blog has a funny url even I can’t remember http://realtownblogs.com/?u=Ardell I have a website that searches the mls called SearchingSeattle.com so I purchased SearchingSeattleBlog.com and pointed it to the Internet Crusade blog.
I don’t know much about blog technology, though I do Ping. My blog is Ask Ardell About Kirkland Real Estate, and I do know about real estate, so that seems to have compensated for what I don’t know about blogging.
I made money from blogging within a very short time, and so am continuing. I have also learned a lot about how consumers view real estate and the technological advances. I toy with the idea of starting my own real estate utopia based on the comments on RainCityGuide.com
I thought stating my short “progression” in the world of blogging, might help someone. I think a GrowABrain type blog might be able to be done through a 3rd part blog company, but the blogs I like best reveal the person behind the blog, like mine and yours. But some of the top blogs do not do that, and it doesn’t seem to have hurt them.
One tip I would give is that people, including me, have a tendency to want to erase it all and start over once they start getting on a roll. But blogs show your journey into blogging and so the meager beginnings are just as important as the progression. When I go to a blog and see they erased everything that was there, I feel a loss. So I would say, fight the urge to erase and let it all hang out.

I have a web site that is not quite ready for viewing.
The site–stylishnoggins.com— was started by two women.
One had breast cancer and they both have alopecia, and know what scratchy wigs and hats feel like..
We will be providing stylish, soft hats and caps for cancer patients or anyone who is going bald, although people with hair have enjoyed wearing our hats.
If I start a blog, can I keep any foul language out if someone tries to send it?
Are there filters for specific words?
I don’t mind people expressing their opinions and sharing stories, but would like to prevent someone who thinks it is fun to send trash from ruining what should be a clean site.
Thanks

Okay, I started a blog, on blogit. Now what? I see people talking about websites, advertisements, linking to other people’s blogs… I’m in over my head, I’m afraid. My blog is more or less just a journal, of my thoughts, opinions, not much of nothing really. Can you give me some sense of direction? Please? Oh, and one more thing… you say that there are sites where I can start a blog for free? So why am I paying $12.95 per month for blogit, and if you use a free site. How would you get paid for writing?

Making money through blogs (and adsense) is rather difficult way from my point of view. It requires much time and effort. So, for those who are willing for easy bread I want to say: it’s not that easy bread.
Running a good blog can be compared to running a local newspaper. You are a journalist, reporter, editor in cheaf, marketing and seo professional while promoting your blog. Think twice before spending years for blogging.
This is of course if you want to make money form blogging. It it’s just your personal public diary online or you do not expect any revenew from what you are writing, that it’s ok, that’s very interesting occupation :)
Good luck to you, who are willing to earn for life through blogging. Luck is very important!

Sorry, i can’t remember your name. Anyway, my name is Kirk. I have seen and read a few blogs but for the life of me, I don’t understand where you find the time to do this. You must have a lot, for sure. It would take me forever just to read enough to communicate back with someone, let alone the writing back. I happen to “stumble upon” your blog, and started reading. By the way, when I mention, “Stumble upon” , do you have any idea of what I might be talking about?
Today, when I saw your blog, I thought it may answer some basic questions I have. I’m sure if I keep reading, I will find out how to find blogs on certain subjects or ideas, most likely, using a search engine, some how? Or maybe I was thinking of writing my own blog, that is. But then there is that time thing, and are there spell checkers for bloggers? I need a spell checker for sure. I am a partial quadrepalegic and was hoping to find some blogs written by others in my situation. It could be like getting therapy for free or something, I just don’t know until I check it out. Maybe I could write a blog about being a gimp. Do you think anybody would be interested in how a gimp like me goes through daily life, or does that turn people off?
Well, I will go back and read some more of your blog. I seem to have a lot of time on hand after all.

Kirk, there is a huge opportunity for people in your situation. As an “expert” on handicap issues and barrier-free design (or lack of it), target design community (Architectural designers, technologists, city planners). There is growing awareness of Universal Accessibility and able-bodied people have no way of understanding that topic unless someone who lives it talks about it.

Thanks for the information on this site. I want to start a blog to discuss ways to improve health care (well beyond how we pay for it — if we just solve that problem, we’ll have a mediocre to bad system we can afford but don’t like) and also to discuss a course on self-improvement and technology to help anyone on their spiritual path, whatever that path happens to be.
You’ve already given me good ideas and I hope to get a lot more as I read further.

read all the “stuff” above where I am writing now. I really want to do this, but the only thing I have in my favour (Canadian spelling) is I just love writing emails, and I can babble on for ever. I work in a greenhouse, in fact the 3rd largest wholesaler in North America, and
I am a retired Early Childhood Educator, or as I like to put it,” a Human Developer”. I also tend to write run-on sentences. Well, I just reread

[...] It is perceived as a very powerful communication (2-way conversational) tool for the future and no wonder. Blog technology has now matured with easy to use applications that allow a newbie blogger to start a blog within a few minutes. So what is a blog? A blog, short for web log is a type of website that is in the form of a journal with text and images arranged in chronological order. Usually updated on a regular basis, copy is written in a more conversational style containing personal thoughts and views on a particular subject or subjects. Readers are usually able to post comments and there are often links to other blogs and web pages with related topics. For more definitions check out Problogger . A person who writes a blog is a “blogger” and when you update your journal it is known as “blogging”. For those of you who are reading this blog, according to Wikipedia, you are part of the “blaudience”. And, BlogDay is August 31st every year. [...]

I have been impressed with looking at your website & learning valuable info that was hard to come by; you seem to have put things readily into a nutshell. We do not have a website as of yet, my husband and i are still at the point of quibbling over a title, if u can believe that! It is my discernment that a journal is a compilation of everything that we deal with from day to day with varied subject matter. But my husband believes that we must have a single, solitary subject matter with the title of key words that will entice the reader to locate this magical site–i.e. sharing photos of & talking about German Shepherd dogs must include the name, German Shepherd Dogs. If one writes a journal, it will consists of a MULTITUDE of subjects ranging from how you tripped over ur German Shepherd Dog which caused the series of catastrophies from the trip to the hospital to the smelly little man in the waiting room to the cold x-ray room with the bouncy technician to the nasty little nurse down the hall who roughly put your cast on (and no, none of these things have actually happened to me, but…). So how DOES one create a website that is both manageable, yet appealing to outsiders? Sighhh…it suuuure would b nice to start. I’ve a plethora of ideas, a volume of sitcoms and not a clue as to how to place it without inadvertantly being kicked off a site for something i didn’t know i shouldn’t do. lol
As for you, Kirk, Penella had the right attitude in answering u. As a special needs person, the world really IS at your fingertips. You will be one of the trailblazers allowing others to understand and remedy your needs. As a healthcare worker & teacher, and a person who has health issues herself, and have children with health issues, i DO know where u’r coming from. As a Boy Scout Leader, i continuously teach our children to be aware of others’ needs as they earn their badges. Soon we will be going for a full day’s activities downtown–all of us in wheelchairs with some type of dilemma–”wounds” we have created & “lack of limb/s”. They will learn the meaning of curbs, inaccessible handicap spaces due to others’ insensitivity to others, traffic, not being able to do for yourself, being stared at, close quarters within small shops and large department stores & inaccessibility to shelves–with no one to really help you. Penella said it eloquently when she wrote, “There is growing awareness of Universal Accessibility and able-bodied people have no way of understanding that topic unless someone who lives it talks about it.” So, get there…Talk about it–you’re not a “gimp”–your heart is as big as ours and has just as much love & feelings as the rest of us. No pity pot for u, fella! We’re all in this world together–if you stop, it ends–keep whatever moving parts you have continuously at work–never let your mind go blank. Keep thinking and keep the pencil moving (even if you have to use ur mouth or ur toes to accomplish this goal!) (I once taught a girl how to play chopsticks with her toes–she had no arms) As Penella wrote, “BLOG ON!” Pamela

Hi, Re : what are blogs ? Excellent informative post.
Blogs are a great simple way for anyone who’s not up on html & website building to have their own site they can post to easily.
Search engines like them & pick up on them quickly if you post regularly.

I want to set up an archive system for my vlog webpage – I’m not using wordpress or any other blog system…
is there a simple way to add the functionality of wordpress (auto archive, mailing lists, blogroll) with a regular webpage?
I’m not using wordpress, simply because I have a specific way I want to layout the page for video. How does rocketboom do their archives? Anyone know? I’m a newbie – any help is greatly appreciated.

I came across your Blog when I typed in Best Blogs in Google Search. Somewhere there, I stumbled across your Blog.
At first glance, I thought, this is just another guy who tries to teach others how to Blog and at the same time, there will be back-end promotion and sales/recommendation, etc.
Then I thought, what the heck but go through a little deeper inside your posts.
I went into What is a Blog? How Blogs Make money Online, Blogging for Beginners.
I like logging for Beginners the Best! It was exactly what I was looking for. Good old open, honest comments and advice from a Pro Blogger.
I was not able to find a Pro Blogger who can help me in my own country yet. Most do not even offer to share their know-how and knowledge, but you are Different!
Amateur Bloggers like me do not have technical know-how to ‘tweak’ our blogs so I subscribed to your Newsletter and hope I will be able to get more Tips from them.
Good job, Darren! Love this Blog!

Hi,
Well I just got this do it yourself website from Homestead specifically to write blogs but I just don’t know how to set it up. According to what you have said above, it isn’t necessary to be technical, but I really think it is since I am totally lost. Any advice you can give me would be very appreciated. I want to set it up so that people can comment just as yours is. Thanks and happy blogging!

Lasik eye surgery:
In this world a lot of peoples are suffering from the eye diseases that’s why everyone must have the knowledge about Lasik surgery. Lasik surgery is refractive surgery for myopia on the anterior surface of the cornea and the entire optical system of the eye. It is the best amongst all eye surgery that is most effective with less pain, fast result. People says it “Lasix”, but it “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.”
So, you must have the complete knowledge about Lasik eye surgery:
, where we should go for the surgery. Does lasik surgery have the side effects or any complications after the operations, how much time it will take to complete, how much cost it have. So, now you can know all of this by the blog. You should go for a experienced surgeon after consulting with eye consultant nearby your place.
Complications:
I will tell you one thing that eye lasik surgery have minor complications which is very less and it can be removed suddenly, also does not harm no more, so forgot about complications.
Cost:
Cost of the operation changed timely also depends upon your eye vision. Generally, 500$ is charged for the operation, but varies on eye conditions.

We already run a successful business but have never ventured into the area of blogging, so it’s great to read about it.
I have a question about our business and blogging…
We rent out people’s car doors as advertising space for our company…basically we send them a car door magnet with our company logo on it, then we pay people to drive around town..so they make a passive income, and we get exposure. Do you think a blog on this would work? Here is the site http://www.carmagnetbusiness.com

Hi! It happened so that I’ve never dealed with blogs before. And actually I wasn’t going to start… But the firm I work in got a new project. – designing a site where people can communicate, share opinions, unite into communities, etc. So I decided to examine different blogs to clear something for myself. After surfing through dozens of them I got even more confused with the task I’ve got – to create some kind of mental model «what are people’s needs in blogging and what tools do they use to satisfy this requirements?» Maybe you could help me in understanding this, please?
Thanx for your blog (it’s one of the most useful among the sites I saw :)

Hello out there, I’m new to this blog thing. I started some three weeks ago and have about 19 posts to date. I’m not sure whether I can call it a blog or what. I read the definitions you gave above with keen interest. Mind you I’m not confused. But I still have a small amount of doubt. While most blogs (and not all as you rightly say) relate to specific topics, mine includes a variety. While many blogs are just a recollection of “personal thoughts”, mine doesn’t confine itself to personal thoughts. I’m including thoughts, opinions, and anything I can write about after careful research and understanding.
Sometimes simply reading definitions doesn’t answer all. Perhaps as an established blogger, which I can see you are, you could enlighten me. So, my question would be : Can I be considered as a blogger? Does my site reflect a blog in the real sense?

I have some tips for a beginner who wants to get started with blogging:
First of all you need to find a profitable niche which has a low competetion. It may help you get the top ranks in search results according to that niche.
Then, choose a keyword-rich domain name, good title and description. After that, start writing posts regularly. Give valuable information and live content. Search engines love that and may bring you a lot of visitors.
So, you can use some free tools for your blogging purpose such as: Blogger Account, Adsense Account, YouTube Account, Flickr Account and some Affiliate Programs. Keep working like that and you may earn a lot of profits just by blogging.
To you success!

As an over-worked lead tech for an IT department with no sense of formal structure, I’ve decided to search for other means of earning money – that is earning money without a boss. I stumbled upon a widget just the other day that listed the top ten “Make money online” sites and Adsense was number one on the list. I checked out the site and read several reviews on the site about earning profit from it and so far, I’m amazed to find this hidden treasure online. I’ve been reading articles after articles and each one has been positive about earning profit. I just wasn’t sure about what type of website to create to accumulate traffic and money immediately until running into this site of yours and the idea of BLOGGING! What a great IDEA! I’ve never blogged before so why not start now and make money while doing it! Tell me, from your experience as a blogger, which of the 100’s of blog services do you recommend and why…so I can start on this money venture and end my miserable JOB. Thanks again, you have been an inspiration to me and, surely from the entries above, to many others.

Thank you for the profound information on blogs and blogging. I’ve been occupied with web design and affiliate marketing for several years. But I didn’t pay much attention to blogging. Now I see that I underestimated the importance of this new Internet phenomenon for web promotion and Internet marketing. Recently I’ve opened Affiliated Business Blog and try to implement the experience you kindly share with us (your blog readers). Again thanks a lot.

I would really like to experience the world of blogging. But I wouldn’t even Know what to put on my blog or where to begin. From what I’m reading above, generally people put what interests them like hobbies or likes. What if what I like or interests me doesn’t interest anyone else? Is this a waste of Blog Space??

This is my first time to post a comment on a blog! I am interested in sharing my knowledge about healthcare, social services and elder care. I am a hospital case manager and a licensed social worker. I am a person who enjoys teaching, locating services for my patients, helping the patient/family to problem solve and utilize their insurance benefits to the max. Also, to locate services/facilities for folks who have no insurance benefits. I love social policy, have a good understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance agencies, HMO’s and love challenging healthcare issues. I believe people want someone they can trust when faced with a health crisis. Let me know what you think, and thanks for the opportunity to learn more about the blogging world.

Hi there, I found that blogging is very suitable for newbie internet marketer to test the water in internet business. Other than easy to configure and use, it is also well indexed by the search engines (they love it!) I will be using blogging to funnel the traffics to the product and services that i highly recommended for my visitors.

From the pre-historic days where we had dinosours , apes & tarzan to the current information age of web technology we had always wise guys like example Mr. Darren Rowse & many others informing us with knowledge / know-hows about different things /aspects affecting our daily life. If you see national geo channel the geologists & other wise scientists/historians have always found some old blogs(writings) on either walls, or in a deep tomb in egypt, or some inside in well trying to tell us something….& to my surprise some governments are spending too muc bucks $$$ just to know what the hell was written. I think blogs will in future make consultancy companies in any field of industry dissapear completely.

My hat’s off to you. I registered my domain a couple of days ago … just for the fun of it. Just last week, I was having a meal and the thought “blogging” came to me out of nowhere … kinda like a “psychic” experience.
So I started a search for available domain names … and I came up with “canyoublogmennow.com.” (Thanks, Verizon!)
Anyway … here I am. And thanks to YOUR blog and YOUR guidance, I think mine will turn out to be a “good” one!

First questions before searching or reading more: Shouldn’t “comments” also appear most recent at the top? At first glance it looks as though nobody has responded since 2005! Also – I’m sure I’ll find the answer to this elsewhere – best templates or formats for blogs? Is Wordpress the way to go? More as I explore.

Thank you very much for the information on Blogging. I am studying the use of Blogs for Adult Literacy and Numeracy learners, and wanted to be able to explain “What is a Blog”.
Your simple, jargon-free explanations made it simple to understand exactly what these things are, and how simple they are to use.
I am looking at having audio blogs as well as written ones to encourage my learners to participate in written text, to give them confidence about what they write and to “Wow” them about being ‘published’ on the internet.

Hi Darren
I run a company based in the UK that manufactures a skin protection product called Derma Shield. Although I say it myself it is a brilliant product that is excellent at dealing with a whole range of skin problems. We sell it throughout the world and I can honestly say we have a very strong (but relatively small) family of users that come from the complete spectrum of society and industry.
OK; end of ad and here’s the challenge!
I have a real passion for helping people solve their skin problems and not always by them purchasing Derma Shield. It may sound conceited, but my depth of practical knowledge, gained from 17 years in the business, on how to help solve skin problems is a great resource for those in need. I want to be able to interact more directly with people who may find my knowledge helpful without spending 12 hours a day on the telephone. It therefore seems to me that a blog may be the answer but I’m only a two finger typist. So what about creating a video blog?
I have the technical kit and feel sure that with some time set aside for learning how to attach such a video blog to one of my websites it is within my personal capabilities. I also feel that using video every other day will not be too time consuming.
Do you have any advice on setting up a video blog and how to get the various video clips appropriately indexed in Google, Yahoo etc.
I’ll be grateful for any advice that you may care to offer.
Thanks
Peter Friswell

This really explains a lot to me. A blog could be anything from a diary to a novel its can be personal or public. I think as an artist the blogs will work for myself just to give my viewers a closer connection with the artist. Also by being able to recieve comments, perhaps I would be able to get advise on a regular. Build a stronger more personal fan bank. So Im going to try and write more bloggs almost like a diary of my thoughts. Check me out sometime and see how I’m doing!

Hello Darren,
I only set up my blog yesterday without prior knowledge about what I was doing. Finding your website and all the information and advice it has is the best thing that has happened to me today. I was getting stressed out because I passed on my web address to a couple of friends and some could not find it. Obviously I am just a day old and need plenty of advice. Yours is a great help. Around how long does it take for a blog to be accessible to people? I would like my friends to log on and view the content and leave comments just like I am doing now on your site.
Thanks again.
Pauline.

I wonder whether you could:

(b) tell me whether you feel that the above style can be income producing or one needs to have a ‘knowledge-based’ blog

I don’t think I have a flair for writing. Still I wish to be known as a renowned writer or a painter/artist. Well many of you may think that is so foolish… And you know what Darren, only last month I have gave up my job to take the first tentative step towards my destiny. Well it already seems like i have taken a wrong turn towards the fulfillment of my dreams. Mom tells me I have messed up my life and the family needs money badly. Hi Darren
I read your blog articles with interest. I have been in the IT world for over 25 years but am not a techy. I set up a Theology & technology website but it got no where as I was very dependent on Web developer friends to help me. I could not rely on them to help me nor fix the bugs. My website lay dormant with bugs while I was paying my ISP to host it for the last 5 years.
So this year (2008), I closed my website with my ISP and started my blog using my previous domain name http://www.theotechs.com II have nowI have set it up in such a way that if anyone types this URL they will be taken to my blogsite.
With no html skills, I was able to set my blog within an hour. I wished I had started this five years ago! I have even earned a few dollars from AdSense in the first week! Yet it cost me nothing to host my blog. All that I did was follow the instructions, read a few articles such as yours and voila I am up and running and my Google Analytics reports show me that I have people from over 4 countries reading my blog.
I do admire you for being on top in just a few years with little knowledge.
Bless you bro!

To be perfectly frank, I understand what blogs are but I struggle with subject matter to use on a blog. I want to explore blogging to earn an income, not concerned at this point on how much, but how? I have begun to read your blog(s) and I am not looking to become rich on it, but really to understand it and even more, why would anyone want to read my thoughts about any particular subject??? I have started a blog that is taking on the theme of my thoughts about various topics, and I started to apply for Adsense and how to incorporate that into my blog.. but the big question still is… how do I get people to read it and why would they? I will continue to read and investigate yours and other blogs on my quest. Just wondered what you could tell me to help with some direction, etc.
Thanks for you efforts too!

Have always been interested in writing. Dad put his foot down on a writing career. But, but …….. I must write or I can’t live! So what I’m not doing a novel yet, but I can blog, can’t I?? Someone out there wants to hire me? I’m thorough, picky, meticulous, attention to details type. Pain in the neck if you want me to go marketing for the food stuff. Yes, I love cooking, too, so I’m very fussy with the food stuff. So if you want me to contribute in a healthy way for a suitable page like shopping for goods etc. contact me. BTW, I’m from Malaysia.

Yep, you are right. I don’t understand blogs. Here are some things I don’t get.
Will this e-mail message I am sending you appear in the blog? Or is it just a way for me to say something to you?
I know I sound obtuse, but I am trying to understand how one uses a blog. Here is why. I am the newsletter editor for the American community in the Dominican Republic. It has been suggested to me that I set up a blog. if it is just a way to send me messages, how is it any better than e-mail?

Hi Laurie, I’m not an expert where IT stuff and blogs are concerned. But my guess after running through a lot of blogs … it’s like everyone gets to share something. And it’s like everyone’s involved. E-mails are more personal in nature. I suggest if you’re using e-mail as well that you keep that on low-profile to avoid scams and spammers. E-mails are good when someone has something sensitive or on the personal side of things to ask. I really don’t suggest sharing too many things private in a blog, unless everyone knows each other fairly well. There’s always an element of danger out there.

WOW. Wow. wow. To say I’m overwhelmed is an understatement. Great info here & I loved your video since I am a very visual learner. Three questions:
with over 700 million (?–really???) blogs available, how does any one blog get a substantial number of viewers? Who are these people that have time to read and post to these blogs? finally, I’m the type of person who would prefer to jump in and try something, learning by discovery. Should I spend more time researching blogs before begining my own, or just dive in?

I have been looking for someone like you that helps me learn. I have a brand new blog – 8 entries, barely any hypertext, and I am trying hard to add to it consistently. That alone is hard.
I am mystified as to how to get my blog connected to others and how to find a community of people interested in the things I am interested in.
I intend to keep reading your posts. So far I appreciate that you haven’t made me, as a beginner, feel like a lost cause!

A blog is the best way for beginners to earn a decent living online as well as providing a useful source of information for others who need it, or are interested and want to find more about a certain topic you cover. Blogging is revolutionary, I’m not just saying that Darren’s proof, along with the many other successful people who now earn a desirable living from home.

Excellent information. I’m looking to set up a blog soon for my business, but, I’m worried that one of my customers may damage our reputation in the industry. Is there a way that you can delete unwanted posts or is that the advantage of blogs, what gets posted can not be removed? I guess the best course of action is to be proactive and respond to that customer immediately. Other customers will see that we’re really trying to help out that person. I can see that one person could really eat up a lot of time if we keep going back and forth on an issue. Any suggestions?

Darren, I am a stay-at-home mom with a teenager with chronic medical conditions and two parents who are needing more care. This makes it difficult for me to hold a ‘regular’ job. I have been studying your site and have ordered your book. I love writing and am, by profession, a teacher and researcher. This just sounds exciting! Is it possible to run multiple blogs? I have several areas of interest that I am exploring but they don’t always fit well together…

I am an activist in my local community and would like to expand my work using the internet. Most of the blogs that I’ve read on topics I’m interested are from the “big boys”- either media organizations or online magazines. This seems to be true because they are that ones that appear first through a Google Search.
Do you offer techniques for using Google to make a blog relevant in their search parameters, or does it just take a lot of time blogging to become relevant? I want the blog to be an additional tool in my work, not something that requires a full time commitment.

I’ve only recently discovered blogging and I’m currently ploughing my way through all of your information. I’m currently stuck at home following a car accident and this seems like a great way to try and generate an income. What special skills do I need Darren? Do I need to be a computer whiz? I have experience in short story writing – would this help?
I’d appreciate any advice/encouragement you can offer.

A blog is a website consisting of entries (also called posts) appearing in reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first . Blogs typically include features such as comments and links to increase user interactivity. Blogs are also called as a weblog or web log. Blogs are similar in format to a daily journal.Blogs are created using specific publishing software.

Every reader, if he has a strong mind, reads himself into the book, and amalgamates (join or mix ) his thoughts with those of the author.
According to me a blog is a web page that serves as a publicly accesible personal journey for an individual. Blog often reflects the personality of the author. Its reflection of something is believed in (or disbelieved in), not on its own direct account only , but through something else also. I don’t mind people expressing their thoughts and sharing stories in a cut paste way which is not easy too and sometime one cant express in more proper way as he/she feels. So BLOG is a REFLECTION of the authors personality.

I am from Solomon Islands. I am relatively new to a lot of internet jargons such as the term blog. As a result I did a live search on the question, What is a blog? I have seen this on several websites I have visited previously. So I was keen to know what it means. From the live search I ended up in your blog. Guess what! What you have posted in this site has really answered my question. Now I am literate to a certain degree with blogs. Thank you so much for creating such a site with a lot of useful information and links about blogs. Thank you for making me one step wiser today!

None of the prior comments mentioned that blogs have provide a publishing “gateway” to the web for people who lacked even the basic technical knowledge and sophistication that was previously required. The creation of blog technology eliminated this barrier to entry to the internet community.
For decades having enough intelligence to be able to access the internet acted as a filter which eliminated most of the totally clueless morons and knukledraggers that are the primary beneficiaries of the introduction of blog technology.
The internet had not seen such a huge influx of the intellectually challenged since the customers of AOL were allowed to go online unescorted.
The “bloggers” as they are called are responsible for the “dumbed down” internet we have today. It is utterly amazing that these deluded individuals honestly believe their blog entries are relevant. This fantasy and the content free nature of their postings provide solid, empirical evidence that these “bloggers” suffer from really serious, heavy duty brain damage.
Worse yet, professional news journalists, a heinous example of this lame new class of clueless, can now to pontificate on the web just as they had previously done using the traditional printed and electronic mass media.
The single best (or worst) example of being “content free” is the vapid “post-modern”, “deconstructed” blogs with the gibberish generated by the subculture of English Lit majors schooled in “literary criticism”.
No other group on the internet comes even close in their uncanny ability to peg the “bogosity meter” that is used extensively in the study of classical quantum bogodynamics.
Unfortunately the genie has been let out of the bottle and there is no viable means to eliminate this class of internet users or the larger blogger community.

I am wanting to take a shot at making some money by blogging, and I am more than a little overwhelmed by all the alternatives from which to choose. Many of the choices were outlined in your Choosing a Blog Platform, but there are too many options and I have too little knowledge. I am about ready to just DO something, anything, even if it is wrong! I suppose that would be better than doing nothing.
Only time will tell if I have anything to say, and that will make more difference than any other variable. A leap into the unknown is always a little intimidating.

It facilitates the exchange of Ideas with other interested parties.

After losing my job of 16+years I have time on my hand to learn more and maybe start my own blog. Your information is great and your advice perfect for me because learning and understanding the little things first helps me to not get overwhelmed and give up before I understand what I am learning.

Up until yesterday I had no intention of subscribing to or contributing to a blog. Our teenage daughters seem to be pretty proficient at blogging, but I was not that interested in such a thing. Having just found out that some of our family members have blogs and use them as an avenue for personal growth, maybe there is something to this after all. Who knows, maybe one day I will start my own and the fact that we could even make some extra money would just be the icing on the cake. Thanks Darren for letting me see another thread of the blogging experience. I am definitely going to click that RSS thing at the upper right hand corner of your page…

I found this to be very educating. Like you I surf the net and do the email thing but that was about it. Everyday there always seems to be something going on that strikes a nerve and leaves me to want to express my opinion but wasn’t sure how to do that. From what I hear “blogging seems to be the way to go but I have one question. It seems like most keep to a handfull of subjects on there blogs, I do not necessarily have any one subject or subjects but would rather vent on numerous items. Is that ok or popular or does blogging only work if you concentrate on a few.
Thank You,
Scott

I have been writing blog posts for almost two years now. And I finally wrote one that pretty much says what I think a blog “is”. I try not to be radical when blogging for obvious reasons. But when I wrote this post I just couldn’t resist taking a shot at newspapers. Because I think blogs and newspapers are the yin and the yang of the news collecting world.
They are rivals certainly and they are trying to coexist in some fashion. I guess the question that comes to my mind is “If your sanity depended on reading blogs instead of newspapers would you give up your newspaper?”

I saw the title to this post and although you posted it several years ago, I thought I would see what your take on this question was because surprisingly enough, I still see this question a lot. Especially on Yahoo Answers.
When I give an answer to this question, I quickly realize that it’s pretty hard to narrow the answer down to some key basics. Of course, as always, you provide a great answer here.

Thanks for this great video–it was “blogging for dummies” like me! My husband is a geek and understands it and is trying to get our blog up at the moment, but this was very helpful so thank you for posting it on your webpage. And I found you through Google and enjoyed watching your videos.

Three years ago, a lot of people were asking what a blog is. Now, they know the answer and want to earn from it.

How does a blog advertise itself? And how can it be used by businesses instead of junk mail (adverts through email). I was reading one of the articles explaining the virtues of blogs but this part didn’t really make sense to me.
Will an answer be sent to me or would I have to find this site and keep waiting to see if there is an answer. I’m not likely to do the latter.

Hello, Darren! I just found you through a link from another page (AccentuateWritersforum.com; a member named Raiscara Avalon…). Great stuff here, I must say. I’ve been meaning to start SOMEthing, and it looks like a good blog may be the way to kick it off (or around). Like a soccer ball.
Thanks for all the meaningful info!

I’ve been looking at this feature on Wordpress blogs for ages and wishing Blogger would implement it. Followed your instructions and it works a treat!

I think the actual definition of a what constitutes a blog is becoming more and more hard to define with all the latest social networking platforms modeling themselves in similar fashions.
