What is a Blog?

Miscellaneous Blog Tips 346 comments

So what is a Blog anyway? I am asked every week via emails, conversation and Instant Messaging chats to define: ‘what is a blog’. If you’re reading this you may well be asking the same question.

There are a number of ways I could answer this question ranging from the broad to the highly technical.

Before I define the ‘what is a blog’ question - here are a few definitions from other much wiser people to get us started:

‘A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser.’ Source

‘A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.’ Source

‘From “Web log.” A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.”‘ Source

‘A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there’s also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc.’ Source

‘A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is “blogging” and someone who keeps a blog is a “blogger.” Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly.’ Source

‘A blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. The term blog is a shortened form of weblog or web log. Authoring a blog, maintaining a blog or adding an article to an existing blog is called “blogging”. Individual articles on a blog are called “blog posts,” “posts” or “entries”. A person who posts these entries is called a “blogger”. A blog comprises text, hypertext, images, and links (to other web pages and to video, audio and other files). Blogs use a conversational style of documentation. Often blogs focus on a particular “area of interest”, such as Washington, D.C.’s political goings-on. Some blogs discuss personal experiences.’ Source.

So What is a Blog???

Confused yet? Don’t be - its really quite simple. To put it as simply as possible - a blog is a type of website that is usually arranged in chronological order from the most recent ‘post’ (or entry) at the top of the main page to the older entries towards the bottom.

Have a look at the main page of my blog at here for an example. for a different example you might like to look at this one (another of mine).

Ok - now you are a seasoned blog reader - you’ve seen two already at least.

Blogs are usually (but not always) written by one person and are updated pretty regularly. Blogs are often (but not always) written on a particular topic - there are blogs on virtually any topic you can think of. From photography, to spirituality, to recipes, to personal diaries to hobbies - blogging has as many applications and varieties as you can imagine. Whole blog communities have sprung up around some of these topics putting people into contact with each other in relationships where they can learn, share ideas, make friends with and even do business with people with similar interests from around the world.

Blogs usually have a few features that are useful to know about if you want to get the most out of them as a reader. Lets examine a couple briefly.

Archives - You might look at the front page of a blog and think that there is not much to them. A few recent entries, some links to other sites and not much else. However its worth knowing that there is a lot more going on under the surface that might initially meet the eye. For example in addition to the main page of this blog - at the time of writing this post there are over 520 other pages or posts below the surface that I’ve written over the past few months.

When I write a post like this one it goes to the top of the front page. As it gets older and as I add more current posts it begins its journey down the page until it disappears from it. This is not the end of its life however, because it goes into the ‘Archives’ of my blog. It sounds like a dusty dark place but its really just like a filing cabinet that is easily accessible in a couple of ways. You can read my ‘archives’ simply by looking on the ’sidebar’ (over on the left of this blog) at the ‘archives’ or ‘categories’ section. There you will see links to all my old posts which you can access either by category. You’ll see a category for ‘Advertising’ - click that link and you’ll see all my old posts on the topic of Advertising with the most recent at the top and the oldest at the bottom.

Comments - Not all blogs use comments - but most do. This blog is not a monologue but a conversation. You can give me feedback on almost everything I write simply by clicking the ‘comments’ link at the bottom of each one of my posts. This will take you to a little form where you leave your name, email and a link to your own blog if you have one as well as your feedback, comment, critique, question, essay on why you love my blog, promise of money…. etc). Try it now. Scroll to the bottom of this page, click ‘comments’ and fill in the blanks with a little introduction to yourself.

A great way to learn about blogs is to read a few. Leave some comments, ask questions and bookmark your favourites. An even better way to learn about blogs is to start your own. Ok - you might be laughing at me now - you think you are not web savy enough to have your own site? You wouldn’t know where to start? You don’t know how?

My Secret

Let me share a secret with you - three years ago I knew nothing about blogs, I had never used the internet for anything more than email, surfing and chatting to friends and I could only barely do any of that! But one day I discovered a blog and after surfing from one to another (blogs tend to link up to other blogs a lot) for a few hours I was hooked and wanted to start my own. I found that there are free blog services that almost anyone could set up in a matter of minutes. Really it is that simple. Literally millions of people blog from around the world. Its not just something for young people, or geeks, or cool folk, or Westerners, or even for people with their own computers - instead its something virtually anyone with access to a computer and the internet once or twice a week can start up.

Are you still confused? Would you like more information? Below are a few helpful articles on the topic - there are many more on the web - just do a search on your favourite search engine. Otherwise shoot me an email using my ‘contact’ button with your question and I’ll do my best to get back to you.

Update: If you’d like to start a blog I’ve written a book - ProBlogger the Book - which is specifically written for new bloggers. I hope you find it helpful.

If you are new to blogging and want some hints on how to get started - keep an eye on my Blogging for Beginners Page for more ways to explore blogging.

One more post you might be interested in - What Is RSS?

Lastly - let me finish with a video that explores the question of what is a blog in a visual form that I’m sure many of you will find helpful.

So now you know WHAT a blog is - learn how to start one and use it to build an online income with ProBlogger the Book.

  • Blogs are probably one of the best formats for personal websties. Depending on which blog software you use, there isn’t much in way of HTML knowledge required and you can be up and running within minutes. I would have given anything for WordPress back in my early days when I kept a site about X-Files the series. :)

  • Wow. Three years ago I knew more about the Internet than the great Darren Rowse? Interesting. Yeah, blogs are pretty simple to set up. Sometimes I wish they were a bit more technical though. It makes it easier to set up splogs.

  • It’s marketing and perhaps a free way for all ‘culture’ : in french “à condtion de se retrouver dehors”..

  • Thanks for all the info, I’m still a little confused on what blogs are all about. I’ll keepa looking.

  • Hello. Your “blogs” have been so informative! You seemed so personable that I am even doing as you ask, and leaving a “comment”. :)

I have been studying websites for the past month, am thinking about going with SBI web host, and am planning to do a site and a blog per month for a total of 10.

I am 68 and have to work fast, considering that I only have 20 years left! Anyway, thank you so much for your site (linked from Lynn Terry’s site); I have learned so much reading your blogs.

No need to answer me - I know you are so busy - but enjoy the read. Char

  • thanks for the comment Char - nice to have you here :-)

  • Hi, i just found this page, and i find it very interesting, i’ll take a look often! I read from Italy, and I’m interested in the “bloggin” world, because i think it’s the real new way of informing people… Thanks for all tips! Bye

  • Hi Darren, It’s only today that I discovered your blog with plenty of information to read. For some time I have been thinking of making my website, weblog just like so many people do. But how to get started and what to put in, which host to use, how to create a good one?? All questions… How wonderful of you to share all the information, which I am going to read on in order to understand more of how to make an interesting blog. Thank you, lots of love Gloria.

I read your information and it was very informative. I would like some help in setting up a blog.

  • I followed a link to your website from an email I received from SANS.ORG. My field is information security and I’d heard that you were the recent victim of a distributed denial of service attack (DDOS). I was curious to find out why a blogger would be a victim of such an attack. I was expecting to find a site with a lot of political ranting and vitriol for content and I’m delighted to discover instead an excellent primer on blogging. Apparently your success has earned the wrath of some envious fools. Best of luck and I hope they catch the bastards.

  • Blogs are the new phenomenon which has changed the way we look for information

  • [...] What is a Blog? [...]

  • Thanks for the great blogs. Keep it up.

  • hey thanks that was lot of useful information there

  • I have been blogging since 1/1/06 after receiveing an email from John Reilly at Internet Crusade asking me to do so. Saul Klein, John Reilly and Mike Barnett are the internet gurus of the real estate industry and were starting up a blog product.

Everything I know about the internet, I know from their listserv, Real Talk, which I have participated in since 1998. So I immediately agreed.

As you say, blogs lead to blogs lead to…and within 10 days or so I received an email from Dustin of RainCityGuide.com asking me to be a “Frequent Contributor” of their site.

The Real Town Internet Crusade blog has a funny url even I can’t remember http://realtownblogs.com/?u=Ardell I have a website that searches the mls called SearchingSeattle.com so I purchased SearchingSeattleBlog.com and pointed it to the Internet Crusade blog.

I don’t know much about blog technology, though I do Ping. My blog is Ask Ardell About Kirkland Real Estate, and I do know about real estate, so that seems to have compensated for what I don’t know about blogging.

I made money from blogging within a very short time, and so am continuing. I have also learned a lot about how consumers view real estate and the technological advances. I toy with the idea of starting my own real estate utopia based on the comments on RainCityGuide.com

I thought stating my short “progression” in the world of blogging, might help someone. I think a GrowABrain type blog might be able to be done through a 3rd part blog company, but the blogs I like best reveal the person behind the blog, like mine and yours. But some of the top blogs do not do that, and it doesn’t seem to have hurt them.

One tip I would give is that people, including me, have a tendency to want to erase it all and start over once they start getting on a roll. But blogs show your journey into blogging and so the meager beginnings are just as important as the progression. When I go to a blog and see they erased everything that was there, I feel a loss. So I would say, fight the urge to erase and let it all hang out.

  • I have a web site that is not quite ready for viewing.
The site–stylishnoggins.com— was started by two women.
One had breast cancer and they both have alopecia, and know what scratchy wigs and hats feel like..
We will be providing stylish, soft hats and caps for cancer patients or anyone who is going bald, although people with hair have enjoyed wearing our hats.
If I start a blog, can I keep any foul language out if someone tries to send it?
Are there filters for specific words?
I don’t mind people expressing their opinions and sharing stories, but would like to prevent someone who thinks it is fun to send trash from ruining what should be a clean site.
    Thanks

    Doug

  • Doug, you may not be able to keep it out, but you can certainly delete it.

  • Hi Darren,

great work and thank you for this excellent blogging resource! This will be a favourite hangout on the web.

  • Just looking around at various options at generating extra earnings online, perhaps even through our own website. These extra earnings will help fund future Food4Music shows and projects.

Please ensure our email isn’t given to 3rd parties. We already get way too much spam.

BTW, you guys have a spelling error on your homepage. “…every week via emails, CONVENVERATION and Instant Messaging…” Beleive it should read, “conversation” ;)

  • This article it great, start a newbie off in the right foot!

  • Okay, I started a blog, on blogit. Now what? I see people talking about websites, advertisements, linking to other people’s blogs… I’m in over my head, I’m afraid. My blog is more or less just a journal, of my thoughts, opinions, not much of nothing really. Can you give me some sense of direction? Please? Oh, and one more thing… you say that there are sites where I can start a blog for free? So why am I paying $12.95 per month for blogit, and if you use a free site. How would you get paid for writing?

  • Thank you Darren! I am a personal coach and I am excited about the opportunity to reach so many people who could benefit from my experience. I am just getting started with blogs and your information is very helpful.

  • Very good guidance…. Thanks anyway… But i’m still confused how actually the bloggers can make a very big money?

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you - for helping me understand what a blog is. This is a great vehicle for my project chronicling my midlife reinvention and those of other midlife women.

  • Hi, Darren!

Just getting started, and finding the technical aspects pretty daunting. Until a month ago, I had not heard of SEO, RSS or any of the rest of the jargon, but will work at slowly incorporating some of your tips as I am able. In an attempt to avoid actual employment, I am doing some freelance writing, pitching articles to local publications, and have gotten bitten by the blogging bug.

I refer to your articles so many times a day that I must be adding to your six-figure income!

    Thanks for the great info!

  • I just discovered this site. I can’t wait to learn more!

    Thanks.

  • Well, I will be 55 tomorrow and I can’t believe that I am now going to learn about blogging so I can share my knowledge and receive some in exchange. I guess you can teach a middle age dog new tricks!

  • Hey Darren, this is great! I’m excited about the prospect of starting my own blog, maybe several. I have some passions in life and see blogging as a way of “living out loud”.

I am also developing an eCommerce site to market health related products and I think this web blogging thing may be a great help. Appreciate your efforts . . . and I will be back.

  • [...] What is a Blog? [...]

  • This is the first time to your website. I’m reading to find out how to make money through blogging. I like your ideas and i hope after reading, I’ll be able to very soon start my own blog.

  • Making money through blogs (and adsense) is rather difficult way from my point of view. It requires much time and effort. So, for those who are willing for easy bread I want to say: it’s not that easy bread.

Running a good blog can be compared to running a local newspaper. You are a journalist, reporter, editor in cheaf, marketing and seo professional while promoting your blog. Think twice before spending years for blogging.

This is of course if you want to make money form blogging. It it’s just your personal public diary online or you do not expect any revenew from what you are writing, that it’s ok, that’s very interesting occupation :)

Good luck to you, who are willing to earn for life through blogging. Luck is very important!

  • I’m learning about blogging. Thanks!

  • Sorry, i can’t remember your name. Anyway, my name is Kirk. I have seen and read a few blogs but for the life of me, I don’t understand where you find the time to do this. You must have a lot, for sure. It would take me forever just to read enough to communicate back with someone, let alone the writing back. I happen to “stumble upon” your blog, and started reading. By the way, when I mention, “Stumble upon” , do you have any idea of what I might be talking about?

Today, when I saw your blog, I thought it may answer some basic questions I have. I’m sure if I keep reading, I will find out how to find blogs on certain subjects or ideas, most likely, using a search engine, some how? Or maybe I was thinking of writing my own blog, that is. But then there is that time thing, and are there spell checkers for bloggers? I need a spell checker for sure. I am a partial quadrepalegic and was hoping to find some blogs written by others in my situation. It could be like getting therapy for free or something, I just don’t know until I check it out. Maybe I could write a blog about being a gimp. Do you think anybody would be interested in how a gimp like me goes through daily life, or does that turn people off?

Well, I will go back and read some more of your blog. I seem to have a lot of time on hand after all.

  • Kirk, there is a huge opportunity for people in your situation. As an “expert” on handicap issues and barrier-free design (or lack of it), target design community (Architectural designers, technologists, city planners). There is growing awareness of Universal Accessibility and able-bodied people have no way of understanding that topic unless someone who lives it talks about it.

    Blog on bro!

  • Your site is full of informations .I have learned about Blogging .
    Thanks.

  • Thanks for the information on this site. I want to start a blog to discuss ways to improve health care (well beyond how we pay for it — if we just solve that problem, we’ll have a mediocre to bad system we can afford but don’t like) and also to discuss a course on self-improvement and technology to help anyone on their spiritual path, whatever that path happens to be.
You’ve already given me good ideas and I hope to get a lot more as I read further.

    Thanks, Pieter Kark

  • Hi, I find this all very interesting but somehow seems way over my head. I’m s-o-o-o computer illiterate I don’t know if I could do a blog and even if I could , I don’t exactly understand how or what about. I’ve
read all the “stuff” above where I am writing now. I really want to do this, but the only thing I have in my favour (Canadian spelling) is I just love writing emails, and I can babble on for ever. I work in a greenhouse, in fact the 3rd largest wholesaler in North America, and
I am a retired Early Childhood Educator, or as I like to put it,” a Human Developer”. I also tend to write run-on sentences. Well, I just reread
this and I hope it makes sense to you. Thanks for all the info so far. I would like some more Please. Bye for now. Talk to me -Joey-

  • Hi Darren

How come you keep writing such wonderful posts. I have found your posts to be simple and full of information. It has something for everyone especially this post would help expereinced bloggers as well. Are you a full time blogger?

  • [...] And last, but certainly not the least, is a post by Darren Rowse with even more blog definitions for you.  [...]

  • I am enjoying reading all about blogging.

  • On the subject of Archives, I click the link and found the old posts on the topic of Advertising. However I didn’t find a month to click. But this site is interesting and I might just start my own blogs.

  • thanks

  • Hi Darren, Glad I stumbled on your blogg. I am a realtor and just started a blog with blogger on downtown columbus lofts. I was hoping to use it to get noticed in a natural search with google on various downtown condo projects. For example, The Battleship Building. No luck though. Google never picks it up. Any suggestions.

  • [...] It is perceived as a very powerful communication (2-way conversational) tool for the future and no wonder. Blog technology has now matured with easy to use applications that allow a newbie blogger to start a blog within a few minutes. So what is a blog? A blog, short for web log is a type of website that is in the form of a journal with text and images arranged in chronological order. Usually updated on a regular basis, copy is written in a more conversational style containing personal thoughts and views on a particular subject or subjects. Readers are usually able to post comments and there are often links to other blogs and web pages with related topics. For more definitions check out Problogger . A person who writes a blog is a “blogger” and when you update your journal it is known as “blogging”. For those of you who are reading this blog, according to Wikipedia, you are part of the “blaudience”. And, BlogDay is August 31st every year. [...]

  • Just learning about this and what all the fuss is about…I always thought, why would anyone read what someone else wrote…someone who wasn’t a journalist or author…now I’m hoooked on several blogs, thanks for your site, it is the first I’ve found tha t so comprehensive explains everything. Thanks.

  • Hello! Thanks for your help to a beginning blogger. It is great to learn of other peoples experiences.

  • [...] I never thought about how many blogs are out there. Reading this article made me realize how many blogs are out there. I realize now that there is millions of blogs out on the WWW about all kinds of subjects. [...]

  • Hi, I want to open a blog site and I found yours and am just following along reading your great explanations and feeling better about getting into an area I know nothing about. I am a journal writer and have my agenda in mind. I just need someone to help do the technical stuff which I truly do not understand and I don’t think I truly want to learn, either. Thanks for all this great info.

  • I have been impressed with looking at your website & learning valuable info that was hard to come by; you seem to have put things readily into a nutshell. We do not have a website as of yet, my husband and i are still at the point of quibbling over a title, if u can believe that! It is my discernment that a journal is a compilation of everything that we deal with from day to day with varied subject matter. But my husband believes that we must have a single, solitary subject matter with the title of key words that will entice the reader to locate this magical site–i.e. sharing photos of & talking about German Shepherd dogs must include the name, German Shepherd Dogs. If one writes a journal, it will consists of a MULTITUDE of subjects ranging from how you tripped over ur German Shepherd Dog which caused the series of catastrophies from the trip to the hospital to the smelly little man in the waiting room to the cold x-ray room with the bouncy technician to the nasty little nurse down the hall who roughly put your cast on (and no, none of these things have actually happened to me, but…). So how DOES one create a website that is both manageable, yet appealing to outsiders? Sighhh…it suuuure would b nice to start. I’ve a plethora of ideas, a volume of sitcoms and not a clue as to how to place it without inadvertantly being kicked off a site for something i didn’t know i shouldn’t do. lol
As for you, Kirk, Penella had the right attitude in answering u. As a special needs person, the world really IS at your fingertips. You will be one of the trailblazers allowing others to understand and remedy your needs. As a healthcare worker & teacher, and a person who has health issues herself, and have children with health issues, i DO know where u’r coming from. As a Boy Scout Leader, i continuously teach our children to be aware of others’ needs as they earn their badges. Soon we will be going for a full day’s activities downtown–all of us in wheelchairs with some type of dilemma–”wounds” we have created & “lack of limb/s”. They will learn the meaning of curbs, inaccessible handicap spaces due to others’ insensitivity to others, traffic, not being able to do for yourself, being stared at, close quarters within small shops and large department stores & inaccessibility to shelves–with no one to really help you. Penella said it eloquently when she wrote, “There is growing awareness of Universal Accessibility and able-bodied people have no way of understanding that topic unless someone who lives it talks about it.” So, get there…Talk about it–you’re not a “gimp”–your heart is as big as ours and has just as much love & feelings as the rest of us. No pity pot for u, fella! We’re all in this world together–if you stop, it ends–keep whatever moving parts you have continuously at work–never let your mind go blank. Keep thinking and keep the pencil moving (even if you have to use ur mouth or ur toes to accomplish this goal!) (I once taught a girl how to play chopsticks with her toes–she had no arms) As Penella wrote, “BLOG ON!” Pamela

Blogs are a great simple way for anyone who’s not up on html & website building to have their own site they can post to easily.
Search engines like them & pick up on them quickly if you post regularly.

  • Darren

I came across your Blog when I typed in Best Blogs in Google Search. Somewhere there, I stumbled across your Blog.

At first glance, I thought, this is just another guy who tries to teach others how to Blog and at the same time, there will be back-end promotion and sales/recommendation, etc.

Then I thought, what the heck but go through a little deeper inside your posts.

I went into What is a Blog? How Blogs Make money Online, Blogging for Beginners.

I like logging for Beginners the Best! It was exactly what I was looking for. Good old open, honest comments and advice from a Pro Blogger.

I was not able to find a Pro Blogger who can help me in my own country yet. Most do not even offer to share their know-how and knowledge, but you are Different!

Amateur Bloggers like me do not have technical know-how to ‘tweak’ our blogs so I subscribed to your Newsletter and hope I will be able to get more Tips from them.

Good job, Darren! Love this Blog!

  • Hi,

Well I just got this do it yourself website from Homestead specifically to write blogs but I just don’t know how to set it up. According to what you have said above, it isn’t necessary to be technical, but I really think it is since I am totally lost. Any advice you can give me would be very appreciated. I want to set it up so that people can comment just as yours is. Thanks and happy blogging!

  • Thanks a lot for the useful information. I recently started my own blog, but i am still not able to make it look like yours. There are some templates, but they are limited. Any idea ? Do i have to change the html codes of my website?

  • This info seems to be pretty helpful. I’ve come across potential employment with blogging, so I’m trying to understand what its all about and how to use it most effectively. I’m still trying to figure out first what to put on my blog to give people any reason to view it, and, next of course, how to get people there. I’ll continue to browse this site for help. Thanks. (P.S. Aren’t the comments supposed to be listed in reverse chronological order too?)

  • This Info seems powerful!

We already run a successful business but have never ventured into the area of blogging, so it’s great to read about it.

I have a question about our business and blogging…

We rent out people’s car doors as advertising space for our company…basically we send them a car door magnet with our company logo on it, then we pay people to drive around town..so they make a passive income, and we get exposure. Do you think a blog on this would work? Here is the site http://www.carmagnetbusiness.com

  • This blogging is a great idea. I’m now trying to get rich from the blog I develop.

  • …seems to be a great informative website. I’ve been looking for just that.
I want to post to a blog of my own which will include a link to a website, all of which I hope will promote a book I’m writing.
Is it okay to use my blog for commercial purposes? I believe at one time blogger.com discouraged this, but they have instigated a new version of blogger, and no mention of this rule appears in the terms of usage.

  • Hi! It happened so that I’ve never dealed with blogs before. And actually I wasn’t going to start… But the firm I work in got a new project. - designing a site where people can communicate, share opinions, unite into communities, etc. So I decided to examine different blogs to clear something for myself. After surfing through dozens of them I got even more confused with the task I’ve got – to create some kind of mental model «what are people’s needs in blogging and what tools do they use to satisfy this requirements?» Maybe you could help me in understanding this, please?
Thanx for your blog (it’s one of the most useful among the sites I saw :)

  • Thanks so much! I’ve gained a great deal of information from you! I actually thought a blog site was for people to share their thoughts and feeling–like a chat room. Would this make my site something other than a blogsite if people share their thoughts and feelings and seek feedback?

  • Hello out there, I’m new to this blog thing. I started some three weeks ago and have about 19 posts to date. I’m not sure whether I can call it a blog or what. I read the definitions you gave above with keen interest. Mind you I’m not confused. But I still have a small amount of doubt. While most blogs (and not all as you rightly say) relate to specific topics, mine includes a variety. While many blogs are just a recollection of “personal thoughts”, mine doesn’t confine itself to personal thoughts. I’m including thoughts, opinions, and anything I can write about after careful research and understanding.

Sometimes simply reading definitions doesn’t answer all. Perhaps as an established blogger, which I can see you are, you could enlighten me. So, my question would be : Can I be considered as a blogger? Does my site reflect a blog in the real sense?

  • hi,please i want to ask about the blog stuff.

  • I have some tips for a beginner who wants to get started with blogging:

First of all you need to find a profitable niche which has a low competetion. It may help you get the top ranks in search results according to that niche.

Then, choose a keyword-rich domain name, good title and description. After that, start writing posts regularly. Give valuable information and live content. Search engines love that and may bring you a lot of visitors.

So, you can use some free tools for your blogging purpose such as: Blogger Account, Adsense Account, YouTube Account, Flickr Account and some Affiliate Programs. Keep working like that and you may earn a lot of profits just by blogging.

    To you success!

  • I am new to blogging, and wish to use it to make money. Not only is your blog *extremely* informative; it’s design is outstanding. Love every bit of it. Keep it up.

  • As an over-worked lead tech for an IT department with no sense of formal structure, I’ve decided to search for other means of earning money - that is earning money without a boss. I stumbled upon a widget just the other day that listed the top ten “Make money online” sites and Adsense was number one on the list. I checked out the site and read several reviews on the site about earning profit from it and so far, I’m amazed to find this hidden treasure online. I’ve been reading articles after articles and each one has been positive about earning profit. I just wasn’t sure about what type of website to create to accumulate traffic and money immediately until running into this site of yours and the idea of BLOGGING! What a great IDEA! I’ve never blogged before so why not start now and make money while doing it! Tell me, from your experience as a blogger, which of the 100’s of blog services do you recommend and why…so I can start on this money venture and end my miserable JOB. Thanks again, you have been an inspiration to me and, surely from the entries above, to many others.

Also, to locate services/facilities for folks who have no insurance benefits. I love social policy, have a good understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance agencies, HMO’s and love challenging healthcare issues. I believe people want someone they can trust when faced with a health crisis. Let me know what you think, and thanks for the opportunity to learn more about the blogging world.

  • From the pre-historic days where we had dinosours , apes & tarzan to the current information age of web technology we had always wise guys like example Mr. Darren Rowse & many others informing us with knowledge / know-hows about different things /aspects affecting our daily life. If you see national geo channel the geologists & other wise scientists/historians have always found some old blogs(writings) on either walls, or in a deep tomb in egypt, or some inside in well trying to tell us something….& to my surprise some governments are spending too muc bucks $$$ just to know what the hell was written. I think blogs will in future make consultancy companies in any field of industry dissapear completely.

  • Thank you very much for the information on Blogging. I am studying the use of Blogs for Adult Literacy and Numeracy learners, and wanted to be able to explain “What is a Blog”.

Your simple, jargon-free explanations made it simple to understand exactly what these things are, and how simple they are to use.

I am looking at having audio blogs as well as written ones to encourage my learners to participate in written text, to give them confidence about what they write and to “Wow” them about being ‘published’ on the internet.

  • Thank you for your useful article. Please can you tell me one more thing? Does a blog mean that I have to answer anybody who emails me on my blog? (Like this email I am sending you?). Also, does it mean much more time on the computer?

    Many thanks, Alex

  • Hi Darren

I run a company based in the UK that manufactures a skin protection product called Derma Shield. Although I say it myself it is a brilliant product that is excellent at dealing with a whole range of skin problems. We sell it throughout the world and I can honestly say we have a very strong (but relatively small) family of users that come from the complete spectrum of society and industry.

OK; end of ad and here’s the challenge!

I have a real passion for helping people solve their skin problems and not always by them purchasing Derma Shield. It may sound conceited, but my depth of practical knowledge, gained from 17 years in the business, on how to help solve skin problems is a great resource for those in need. I want to be able to interact more directly with people who may find my knowledge helpful without spending 12 hours a day on the telephone. It therefore seems to me that a blog may be the answer but I’m only a two finger typist. So what about creating a video blog?

I have the technical kit and feel sure that with some time set aside for learning how to attach such a video blog to one of my websites it is within my personal capabilities. I also feel that using video every other day will not be too time consuming.

Do you have any advice on setting up a video blog and how to get the various video clips appropriately indexed in Google, Yahoo etc.

I’ll be grateful for any advice that you may care to offer.

    Thanks

  • This really explains a lot to me. A blog could be anything from a diary to a novel its can be personal or public. I think as an artist the blogs will work for myself just to give my viewers a closer connection with the artist. Also by being able to recieve comments, perhaps I would be able to get advise on a regular. Build a stronger more personal fan bank. So Im going to try and write more bloggs almost like a diary of my thoughts. Check me out sometime and see how I’m doing!

  • This all looks cool and groovy!I-m looking for something that my students can all read and possibly contribute to-Is this it?-Oh, by the way cecilia-I’m with you on the ‘being ignored by your teenagers’ one!Hang on in there!

  • Hello Darren,
I only set up my blog yesterday without prior knowledge about what I was doing. Finding your website and all the information and advice it has is the best thing that has happened to me today. I was getting stressed out because I passed on my web address to a couple of friends and some could not find it. Obviously I am just a day old and need plenty of advice. Yours is a great help. Around how long does it take for a blog to be accessible to people? I would like my friends to log on and view the content and leave comments just like I am doing now on your site.
    Thanks again.
    Pauline.

  • On and off, I’ve been weblogging since this summer. Right now, I’m doing a business proposal for a project management class, and it’s about creating a certain kind of blog, or a new form of blog that will bring lots of traffic. I think most of the time I find myself in need of information, and I enjoy your website because of all the helpful tips and information that is available. I’m currently looking through your beginners’ tips, and I hope to come through with a focused and interesting version of a blog I can propose.

  • yea is very intereesting this stuff about blogs i made one and its fun and very useful for people.

  • I am a complete novice and keep hearing about blogs. Very cool and what a wonderful intro to the subject. I will be spending much time on this blog soaking everything up.

  • very interesting though, but i do helps me to give a few fresh ideas !!!.. :-)

  • Very helpful piece - thank you.

    I wonder whether you could:

    (a) direct me to a few (well executed and presented) ‘personal diary’ styled blogs so I can see how they are formatted and how truly interesting they are

    (b) tell me whether you feel that the above style can be income producing or one needs to have a ‘knowledge-based’ blog

    Many Thanks

  • I used blogger for making blog. Blog is a journal that you have updated post. Thanks for the information that you have posted here about blog. Keep up the good work.. :)

  • i think blog is my favorite because its really good n quiet pretty too.

  • Thank you very much for taking your time in this great blog. I am also starting a blog and helps so much the work some of you have previously done. Muchas gracias !!!!

  • Bloging means to write, we write as good writer.

  • So in real words it’s an internet Diary nothing more

  • guess that depends what you write in your diary neil

  • The blog is an indirect form to attract cliks to our pages. If post blogs in bloggers that has greater page rank, we will see the results faster

  • I don’t think I have a flair for writing. Still I wish to be known as a renowned writer or a painter/artist. Well many of you may think that is so foolish… And you know what Darren, only last month I have gave up my job to take the first tentative step towards my destiny. Well it already seems like i have taken a wrong turn towards the fulfillment of my dreams. Mom tells me I have messed up my life and the family needs money badly. I happened to stumble upon your blog site today, and have learned what i wished to know for a long time. Having a blog site of my own would I hope satisfy my inner hunger to write and get in the money that we desperately need. Thanks Darren.

  • I have been blogging for a year now, and yet you still enlighten me of what a blog is. Thanks!

  • I am just starting out with a new online business and I had no idea what a blog is. This is all new to me so it is off to school and thanks for the lesson

  • blogs are for people who are not intelligent enough to use a forum.

  • I have been so educated. I had no idea of what a blog was until now. I have blogged before but did not know it. Thanks for the enlightenment.

  • i liked the different views on blog!

  • very intersting and informative.. was wondering since a long time what the hell is a blog and a blogger. i will try to set up my own blog as soon as i get time.

  • blog is not only a internet diary - its a important marketing tool - its a important public relation tool - and even more blogs are an important seo tool. what a great tool !

  • very good intro to blogging - don’t stop thinking and blogging

  • Hi Darren

I have heard about blogs before, but going into the details of it for the first time. One of the important thing I noticed about the blogs is, it gives an wonderful chance for the people having common interests to communicate and share their ideas. It’s a great opportunity.

I will read and learn more about blogs and will try to make it useful. I should thank for all those information and will be taking the liberty to do more posts like this for more helps and clearing doubts.

    with regards
    Das

  • Thanks for explaining! I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. The video was perfect - in plain English. Thanks agian!

  • Blog is a place to handwrite with a keyboard!
And so feel free to express that could be lovely :)

  • Hi Darren

I read your blog articles with interest. I have been in the IT world for over 25 years but am not a techy. I set up a Theology & technology website but it got no where as I was very dependent on Web developer friends to help me. I could not rely on them to help me nor fix the bugs. My website lay dormant with bugs while I was paying my ISP to host it for the last 5 years.

So this year (2008), I closed my website with my ISP and started my blog using my previous domain name http://www.theotechs.com II have nowI have set it up in such a way that if anyone types this URL they will be taken to my blogsite.

With no html skills, I was able to set my blog within an hour. I wished I had started this five years ago! I have even earned a few dollars from AdSense in the first week! Yet it cost me nothing to host my blog. All that I did was follow the instructions, read a few articles such as yours and voila I am up and running and my Google Analytics reports show me that I have people from over 4 countries reading my blog.

I do admire you for being on top in just a few years with little knowledge.

    Bless you bro!

    Adon

  • I strongly agree with your definito Darren. You summed it up pretty well. You can literally blog about anything. I have multiple blogs ranging from airsoft to knee-hockey!

  • very intersting and informative . the best in this item

  • A blog is a special place where you can as Airsoft Maniac said write about literally anything.

  • As Airsoft Maniac said, you can blog about ANYTHING!

  • I love blogging especially Blogger and Wordpress.

  • there are other post from my profile which u can see, but i aint making a cent from this adsense thing.

  • To be perfectly frank, I understand what blogs are but I struggle with subject matter to use on a blog. I want to explore blogging to earn an income, not concerned at this point on how much, but how? I have begun to read your blog(s) and I am not looking to become rich on it, but really to understand it and even more, why would anyone want to read my thoughts about any particular subject??? I have started a blog that is taking on the theme of my thoughts about various topics, and I started to apply for Adsense and how to incorporate that into my blog.. but the big question still is… how do I get people to read it and why would they? I will continue to read and investigate yours and other blogs on my quest. Just wondered what you could tell me to help with some direction, etc.

    Thanks for you efforts too!

  • all my doubts about blogs are cleared thanks to ur article

  • Hello Darren,

A very interesting and informative article on Blog for begineers.

  • Have always been interested in writing. Dad put his foot down on a writing career. But, but …….. I must write or I can’t live! So what I’m not doing a novel yet, but I can blog, can’t I?? Someone out there wants to hire me? I’m thorough, picky, meticulous, attention to details type. Pain in the neck if you want me to go marketing for the food stuff. Yes, I love cooking, too, so I’m very fussy with the food stuff. So if you want me to contribute in a healthy way for a suitable page like shopping for goods etc. contact me. BTW, I’m from Malaysia.

  • Yep, you are right. I don’t understand blogs. Here are some things I don’t get.

Will this e-mail message I am sending you appear in the blog? Or is it just a way for me to say something to you?

I know I sound obtuse, but I am trying to understand how one uses a blog. Here is why. I am the newsletter editor for the American community in the Dominican Republic. It has been suggested to me that I set up a blog. if it is just a way to send me messages, how is it any better than e-mail?

  • Hi Laurie, I’m not an expert where IT stuff and blogs are concerned. But my guess after running through a lot of blogs … it’s like everyone gets to share something. And it’s like everyone’s involved. E-mails are more personal in nature. I suggest if you’re using e-mail as well that you keep that on low-profile to avoid scams and spammers. E-mails are good when someone has something sensitive or on the personal side of things to ask. I really don’t suggest sharing too many things private in a blog, unless everyone knows each other fairly well. There’s always an element of danger out there.

  • Want to learn about blogging…where to begin?

  • we are looking forward to adding an interactive section to our website & hope that we will be very ‘with -it’ in another 3 years! I guess there is hope.

  • WOW. Wow. wow. To say I’m overwhelmed is an understatement. Great info here & I loved your video since I am a very visual learner. Three questions:
with over 700 million (?–really???) blogs available, how does any one blog get a substantial number of viewers? Who are these people that have time to read and post to these blogs? finally, I’m the type of person who would prefer to jump in and try something, learning by discovery. Should I spend more time researching blogs before begining my own, or just dive in?

  • Hi Darren

I just want to thank you for the information you are giving us newbies. I was a little intimidated about blogs. I want to learn more about how to make 6 figure income from blogging just like you. Please email me if you have time

  • Thanks Dear,

Its great of you to have given these informations. though a bit confused I think its a tool I have to unscrew the days to come.

  • If i am to say anything about blogging i would say its really educative anything you stumble across can be in one way or the other very helpful but as the aspect of making money through blogging, it would depend on the nature of work you are doing that determines earning through blogging. Thanks to blogging and blogger would get you all burgers.

  • These written words make me a first time blogger! My imagination is getting the best of me! How will i use this seemingly simple communication tool? It’s intriguing to learn that blogging is a potential money maker! Hmm! Could this be the incentive I need to create a blog that peaks the interest of my young teenage boys so they might improve their writing skills? (I’ll “blog” you again when I figure this all out!)

  • [...] http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/02/05/what-is-a-blog/ - $150 [...]

  • This information is a killer… I can’t even say WOW.. you almost supply the information related to blog.

  • Just read the article and found it very informational. My business partner and I were thinking that blogging would be an important marketing tool, but it looks like it can me much more than that. Thanks for the information.

  • It was suggested that I have a blog on my website. Thanks for the introduction; you are the first to help me on this.

  • Still very confused, but very interested on hoe to get started especially withway to make a little income from blogging.Any suggestions on how or where to start and ideas to blog about that are profitable if there is such a thing as one or so specific items to blog about? Basicly I just need help because this just confuses the heck out of me. Thank You for your time

  • I hear blogging is out and now myspace.com is hot. My daughter is a big fan of youtube.com. I just don’t get it. Low resolution videos just don’t do it for me.

  • I have not a clue and am really keen to sort myself out and understand. Your introduction to blogging is excellent. Top marks. I am going to start searching now. Thanks.

  • Your intro here is very good and easy to follow . I just created a website and put in a comments section for what I think is for weblog on my site http://www.bhslax.com. If one makes a comment, is it actually added to that site ? I tried it and I didn’t see any new “blogs” ? Any insights on this. Thanks I am trying your coments to see how it works..

  • I thought this was great. I’ve just decided to share my gardening obsession with the world through a blog. I’m sure my kids will be grateful I’ll have an outlet other than them to talk about compost and seedlings and raised beds.

I have written many essays on Atheism, many of them published in print or on line. I would like more people to read them. Is a blog the way t do that?

  • Are there any terms out there to describe a person in charge of managing/overseeing a companies internal blog? I’ve heard some use the term “gardener,” but never seen that printed anywhere. Any thoughts?

  • I have been looking for someone like you that helps me learn. I have a brand new blog - 8 entries, barely any hypertext, and I am trying hard to add to it consistently. That alone is hard.

I am mystified as to how to get my blog connected to others and how to find a community of people interested in the things I am interested in.

I intend to keep reading your posts. So far I appreciate that you haven’t made me, as a beginner, feel like a lost cause!

  • just reading your tips and doing the step you suggested in writing a comment. i have a ecommerce website on soy candles and just looking for ways to market it. have been told i need to do a business blog and don’t know anything about blogging, so educating myself.

  • I’m new on this stuf. You really shed a light for. I haven’t got a blog yet but think I’ll make one. Thanks.

  • A blog is the best way for beginners to earn a decent living online as well as providing a useful source of information for others who need it, or are interested and want to find more about a certain topic you cover. Blogging is revolutionary, I’m not just saying that Darren’s proof, along with the many other successful people who now earn a desirable living from home.

    Thanks for you information.

Excellent information. I’m looking to set up a blog soon for my business, but, I’m worried that one of my customers may damage our reputation in the industry. Is there a way that you can delete unwanted posts or is that the advantage of blogs, what gets posted can not be removed? I guess the best course of action is to be proactive and respond to that customer immediately. Other customers will see that we’re really trying to help out that person. I can see that one person could really eat up a lot of time if we keep going back and forth on an issue. Any suggestions?

  • 5wokdi Hello! I’m Samuel Smith, i’m from Switqerland i and find your site really brilliant!

  • Blogging is awesome. I love blogging
Want to know what blogging is? Then check out my blog….hehe
But seriously I love it and this explanation is great for newbies

  • Great post!

I read this post previously and it has helped me gain an insight into what blog is. Along the way I’ve learned to use blogger to manage my own blog and it is, no doubt, a very effective tool.

I hope others will find your post useful.

  • Darren, I am a stay-at-home mom with a teenager with chronic medical conditions and two parents who are needing more care. This makes it difficult for me to hold a ‘regular’ job. I have been studying your site and have ordered your book. I love writing and am, by profession, a teacher and researcher. This just sounds exciting! Is it possible to run multiple blogs? I have several areas of interest that I am exploring but they don’t always fit well together…

  • I’m trying to get into blogs because I love writting out my thoughts on paper and now I know you can make a very good desirable living from blogging..I just want more information on how to start blogging…thanks

  • I’m just getting into blogging reading up on it trying to get some information because I’m very new to it

I wasn’t aware that you were able to actually make a good living from blogging…so I’m basically just looking for information on how do you actually get started…thanks in advance

I am an activist in my local community and would like to expand my work using the internet. Most of the blogs that I’ve read on topics I’m interested are from the “big boys”- either media organizations or online magazines. This seems to be true because they are that ones that appear first through a Google Search.

Do you offer techniques for using Google to make a blog relevant in their search parameters, or does it just take a lot of time blogging to become relevant? I want the blog to be an additional tool in my work, not something that requires a full time commitment.

  • I just typed in “What is Blog” & it brought me to your site Darren.

Cool stuff. I’m putting a powerpoint together on blogging.

Thanks for the cool stuff yet again!

  • Hi Darren,
I’ve only recently discovered blogging and I’m currently ploughing my way through all of your information. I’m currently stuck at home following a car accident and this seems like a great way to try and generate an income. What special skills do I need Darren? Do I need to be a computer whiz? I have experience in short story writing - would this help?
I’d appreciate any advice/encouragement you can offer.
    Cheers mate,
    Andy

  • Andy - when I started blogging I was only at the beginning of my journey with computers. I could email, use Word etc - but that’s about it. There are some good easy tools to get started with blogging. Check out the blogging for beginners series for a starting point.

  • Hey Darren! I saw your bit on the news and was most impressed by the possibilities… I am new to blogging but look forward to seeing what I can do. Do you have any ideas on particular topics for blogs ie. what would be a waste of time and is it clever to tune in to broad market appeal topics? I’m a great researcher and so can probably blog on about anything! Thankyou!

  • hey darren, i am new to all this i already work part time at home so this would be a great side thing for me to do. i saw the clip on channel ten and i was like why not ill have a look. i am not to good with the computers though and worried it may be to hard to do but ill do some research and see how i go. im going to check out some other blogs now so wish me luck lol. im also unsure you say you can get paid to do this but i dont get how that works?

  • i would like to learn more about blogs n blogging, and make money, all this is new to me but i m very interested if you can help me, thanks

  • As is the case with most of the comments on this page I’m just getting started and here I am. Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks for the description of various definitions about what a blog is. You brodened my horizon. That is like a phd thesis introduction.

  • Thanks for the info…do people understand the value of your information? I hope so as it is very educational.

  • Your ideas from the experience in blogging is informative on this subject, but for me how do i get started, i have just started my business in immigration & travel and would want a blog for marketing into the world.

    God Bless!

  • This blog is very useful to me, after reading this blog i got an idea to start blogging.

    thanks…..

  • Thanks for the info Darren; I totally understand Blogs now without any questions , so far(smile)

  • I recently purcheased this website a few months ago because I am very interested in making money at home
I havn’t had any comments or any action what so ever on

  • I do agreed with you that anyone now can start a blog to share their thoughts or news. It’s almost replace with the media role. The power of blogs is amazing. It’s can reach the world within a second once you published your blogs.

    To your success

  • The great thing of setting up a blog is that it is very easy for people who don’t have the technical knowledge. My first blog was at a free blogging service, but now (years later) I have more knowledge about webdesign and programming codes, I’ve setup a blog on my own host. Blogging is a great inventure!

  • thanks for this info, you have no idea how much work i have avoided for reading these, and also how much money i can save. i’m going to use blogger.com service. i wonder if its anyway to track your traffic in blogs, maybe google analytics?

  • I am a new blogger, I am in awe of the information you have here… great going

  • I find your format enjoyable to read, easy to understand and encouraging. So many times reading instructions on how to do something is so intimidating and when you have dyslexia it is easy to get discouraged. Thank you for helping this newbie.

  • First time post, have wanted to get my head around the whole blogging thing for a while, this is really useful. Unlike most web-type people I’m not so good at diving in and seeing what happens, I always feel the need to read a text book first! This blog is helping to fill in the back knowledge that everyone else seems to already have; finally, I GET IT!!!

  • A blog is a website consisting of entries (also called posts) appearing in reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first . Blogs typically include features such as comments and links to increase user interactivity. Blogs are also called as a weblog or web log. Blogs are similar in format to a daily journal.Blogs are created using specific publishing software.

  • I am beginner of blogging and I’m not familiar with it. Although I read about your definition of what you call blog, I am still confuse. Can you explain to me how can I begin blogging and what is it about.

  • hi,
Your blog is really helpful , reassuring and informative.
I am interested in getting a website, so that I can have my genealogy, family photos, etc. on it . I also want a blog.
Is it possible to have those things on a blog and not bother with a website?

    thanks for your help.
    June Brasgalla

  • Your blog is informative. For me blog is an personal diary on which you post or create article based on your needs or niche.

  • Great information on blogs for newbies and advanced users. I learned some new stuff. Thanks for sharing Darren.

  • i take blog as your shop. the gpood stuff u have, the more visitors you get. and then their is advertisers to get eyeballs too.

  • Every reader, if he has a strong mind, reads himself into the book, and amalgamates (join or mix ) his thoughts with those of the author.

According to me a blog is a web page that serves as a publicly accesible personal journey for an individual. Blog often reflects the personality of the author. Its reflection of something is believed in (or disbelieved in), not on its own direct account only , but through something else also. I don’t mind people expressing their thoughts and sharing stories in a cut paste way which is not easy too and sometime one cant express in more proper way as he/she feels. So BLOG is a REFLECTION of the authors personality.

  • I am from Solomon Islands. I am relatively new to a lot of internet jargons such as the term blog. As a result I did a live search on the question, What is a blog? I have seen this on several websites I have visited previously. So I was keen to know what it means. From the live search I ended up in your blog. Guess what! What you have posted in this site has really answered my question. Now I am literate to a certain degree with blogs. Thank you so much for creating such a site with a lot of useful information and links about blogs. Thank you for making me one step wiser today!

  • Thank you for the info you provided.I am completely computer dumb and i hope that with help i can get some of my idea’s and opinions out into the world.Your article has definetly pointed me in the right direction.Although i am not completely clear on what to do to start, i am motivated to research and find out .When i become a famous person I will make sure i give credit to your article for it part in my life.

  • hey im learning how to blog for my english 103 class. The class is very internet orientated, but the professor has a “walk you through it” attitude which is more than comforting as a new freshman at BSU. This has been assigned as one of our readings, so i figured id follow all the directions!
    thanks bunches,

  • None of the prior comments mentioned that blogs have provide a publishing “gateway” to the web for people who lacked even the basic technical knowledge and sophistication that was previously required. The creation of blog technology eliminated this barrier to entry to the internet community.

For decades having enough intelligence to be able to access the internet acted as a filter which eliminated most of the totally clueless morons and knukledraggers that are the primary beneficiaries of the introduction of blog technology.

The internet had not seen such a huge influx of the intellectually challenged since the customers of AOL were allowed to go online unescorted.

The “bloggers” as they are called are responsible for the “dumbed down” internet we have today. It is utterly amazing that these deluded individuals honestly believe their blog entries are relevant. This fantasy and the content free nature of their postings provide solid, empirical evidence that these “bloggers” suffer from really serious, heavy duty brain damage.

Worse yet, professional news journalists, a heinous example of this lame new class of clueless, can now to pontificate on the web just as they had previously done using the traditional printed and electronic mass media.

The single best (or worst) example of being “content free” is the vapid “post-modern”, “deconstructed” blogs with the gibberish generated by the subculture of English Lit majors schooled in “literary criticism”.
No other group on the internet comes even close in their uncanny ability to peg the “bogosity meter” that is used extensively in the study of classical quantum bogodynamics.

Unfortunately the genie has been let out of the bottle and there is no viable means to eliminate this class of internet users or the larger blogger community.

  • Great Blog, you open my mind in a way that I will be forever thankful.

  • Just read your blog it was a requirement for a class I’m taking at Drake University here in Des Moines. Getting ready to create my own blog I’ll let you know how everything goes.

  • For me it is a freedom of expression.

  • I have just started searching on how I could network with people that are looking to build second homes on Lake Winnipasauke in New Hampshire. I am a builder and am looking to reach more people around the United States that have thought about building in New Hampshire. As I am searching I noticed that blogging is a big thing now. I know nothing about it and was wondering if I needed a web page in order to blog? Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thanks

    Tim

  • Its a great knowledge about blog. It will help me to start my new blog.

    thanks

  • Thanks for this site. It’s helping me to establish my own blog.

  • what a wonderful write up you have, i have been interested in setting up a blog but i don’ t know how to do that, i will appreciate if you can guid me on how to do it and i want to know if i must have a website b/4 i can start blogging thanks.

  • I was introdroduced to blogging when I started a page on Myyahoo 360 but I was working two jobs and managing 4 kids from 1 to 14 yrs old. But the thought always stuck in my head. I am a nurse…an LPN (licensed practical nurse and love what I do!!!) But I am getting burnt out. I am totally interested in blogging and my husband is really encouraging me. I lost my job a month ago and wanted to use my skills in other ways and he and my former co-worker think I should give it a go. I have NO experience or idea how this works. I have began some research today. Could you send me in the right direction? I do not even have a name for my site. I would really appreciate it. Thanks Alot!!!!

  • i watch your video but still dont understand how to create a blog i am not computer literate but i am trying.

  • very nice definition of blog. thanks a bunch …

  • Blogs could be defined as ‘human journals’ with the emphasis on ‘human’. Whether individual, collective or commercial, blogs are a representation of human ideas, knowledge and mood in time and space. Too philosophical? :-)

  • Hi,
Thanks for sharing, I am computer semi literate but do not really have the handles on the urls…..links an and out and reciprocal etc that go with blogging properly. I am trying ebay and wordpress bloggs. but it is a bit overwhelming.

  • i never knew there were different types of blogs. I thought blogs were only online diaries, only describing the blogger and his experiences. so it could be about cameras, recipes, work, movies, etc..

    i learned a lot. thanks.

  • I will check the article about blog chronological history. I suppose can find something, which can help me guess what is the future of blogging

  • Now i know! i think can use this as an electronic suggestion box for my retail outlet.

  • I am wanting to take a shot at making some money by blogging, and I am more than a little overwhelmed by all the alternatives from which to choose. Many of the choices were outlined in your Choosing a Blog Platform, but there are too many options and I have too little knowledge. I am about ready to just DO something, anything, even if it is wrong! I suppose that would be better than doing nothing.

Only time will tell if I have anything to say, and that will make more difference than any other variable. A leap into the unknown is always a little intimidating.

    Banzai!

  • Great Help! Im doing work in class, and this site helps alot. thx

  • To me a blog is a place to share your passion with others.

It facilitates the exchange of Ideas with other interested parties.

Perhaps my definition is a little more abstract than others’ but that’s how I see it.

  • I think a blog should be treated as a conversation you would have face-to-face with someone. It should be respectful, content worthy and open minded.

  • You have left me a lot clearer.Tell me something? How do Bloggers earn through blogging? I mean by the end of the day is it just sharing and airing your views or there is money matters involved also? Seriously.

  • Hey Steve,

I just put my first blog up on Dec 13 ‘08. It is my journal of my online income success. I am at this site to learn more about blogging too. My current mentor says the way to earn with a blog is to build an opt-in mailing list and provide them valuable content.

  • dont have a site yet looking for help in making one, for my films I make

  • glad to have found your blog.It helps a lot on topics regarding blogging etc. Plan to craete one blog web but just not sure where to start.
Anyway, keep on writing .I’m sure i wanna follow your guides and advice in time to come.
    Cheers!!!!!

  • thank you very much for this great blog. your post about the explanation of blog was very useful, to me. you explained the blog world in such a good and easy language that i as a german understood the meaning of blogs better then in any other german article i read. thanx

  • Yep, agree with all of that! I’m just getting into blogging and using Wordpress - can’t believe I’m so far behind with it all. It’s just such a wonderful thing that’s happened to the internet

I am so glad I found your site; it is well written and easy to understand. The company I used to work for had a blog and I would read the postings but never fully understood what a blog was. After losing my job of 16+years I have time on my hand to learn more and maybe start my own blog. Your information is great and your advice perfect for me because learning and understanding the little things first helps me to not get overwhelmed and give up before I understand what I am learning.

    Thank you,
    Rebecca

  • well said darren, you have taken care of many aspects in the defination of blog…

  • I’ve seen a few sites about blogging but yours is the most informative I’ve come across so far. Thank you for providing such a neat service.

  • Up until yesterday I had no intention of subscribing to or contributing to a blog. Our teenage daughters seem to be pretty proficient at blogging, but I was not that interested in such a thing. Having just found out that some of our family members have blogs and use them as an avenue for personal growth, maybe there is something to this after all. Who knows, maybe one day I will start my own and the fact that we could even make some extra money would just be the icing on the cake. Thanks Darren for letting me see another thread of the blogging experience. I am definitely going to click that RSS thing at the upper right hand corner of your page…

  • Clear explanation! I more like to manage blog than web. :)

  • thanks, for the inspiration and the guidance u have given in ur blog. i think i still need to do enough study on perfect presentation

  • I found this to be very educating. Like you I surf the net and do the email thing but that was about it. Everyday there always seems to be something going on that strikes a nerve and leaves me to want to express my opinion but wasn’t sure how to do that. From what I hear “blogging seems to be the way to go but I have one question. It seems like most keep to a handfull of subjects on there blogs, I do not necessarily have any one subject or subjects but would rather vent on numerous items. Is that ok or popular or does blogging only work if you concentrate on a few.

    Thank You,
    Scott

  • I have been writing blog posts for almost two years now. And I finally wrote one that pretty much says what I think a blog “is”. I try not to be radical when blogging for obvious reasons. But when I wrote this post I just couldn’t resist taking a shot at newspapers. Because I think blogs and newspapers are the yin and the yang of the news collecting world.
They are rivals certainly and they are trying to coexist in some fashion. I guess the question that comes to my mind is “If your sanity depended on reading blogs instead of newspapers would you give up your newspaper?”

  • I am trying to learn as much as I can about blogging. My brother, suggested your site if I wanted to blog as more than just a hobby using Blogger. I am really fascinated with the whole Blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Podcast, thing. The flow of knowledge and ideas has changed so much in just a very short period of time, as well as the audience one can reach.

  • Very good article. Gives a clear definition and what not. :D

  • I’m new to this world and I’m so happy to find someone that can explain it so clearly. thanks

  • I saw the title to this post and although you posted it several years ago, I thought I would see what your take on this question was because surprisingly enough, I still see this question a lot. Especially on Yahoo Answers.

When I give an answer to this question, I quickly realize that it’s pretty hard to narrow the answer down to some key basics. Of course, as always, you provide a great answer here.

  • Thanks for this great video–it was “blogging for dummies” like me! My husband is a geek and understands it and is trying to get our blog up at the moment, but this was very helpful so thank you for posting it on your webpage. And I found you through Google and enjoyed watching your videos.

  • i found this site, cause blogcatalog just rejected my listing, and said it is not a blog…
so i’m surfing around, and found your site.
i have to re-think what should i do now..
    thanks for sharing.

  • Three years ago, a lot of people were asking what a blog is. Now, they know the answer and want to earn from it.

  • Great Post! Thanks for giving detailed description about blog.

  • How does a blog advertise itself? And how can it be used by businesses instead of junk mail (adverts through email). I was reading one of the articles explaining the virtues of blogs but this part didn’t really make sense to me.

Will an answer be sent to me or would I have to find this site and keep waiting to see if there is an answer. I’m not likely to do the latter.

  • Hello, Darren! I just found you through a link from another page (AccentuateWritersforum.com; a member named Raiscara Avalon…). Great stuff here, I must say. I’ve been meaning to start SOMEthing, and it looks like a good blog may be the way to kick it off (or around). Like a soccer ball.

Thanks for all the meaningful info!

    Michael

  • Its a nice post and every article on problogger is very in interesting.
Cool to have people who share knowledge like that, this really helps.

  • This is definitely great information. I’m doing some social media optimization myself and this was very helpful. However, can you possible explain to me how posting commets to blogging article boosts the pr. I’m pretty new at this. Thanks

  • I’ve been looking at this feature on Wordpress blogs for ages and wishing Blogger would implement it. Followed your instructions and it works a treat!

  • I think the actual definition of a what constitutes a blog is becoming more and more hard to define with all the latest social networking platforms modeling themselves in similar fashions.
