Add Categories to your Blogger Blog

With Movabletype and many other platforms categories enable a wonderful way of organizing your blog. Each post in this blog is allocated to a category (or more than one) which means readers only interested in one topic (Adsense for example) can easily find every article on the site focusing upon it. In effect you can end up with many targeted mini blogs within the bounds of your full blog with categories.

One of the frustrating aspects of using the Blogger blogging platform is their lack of a categories feature. It is one of the reasons that I gave Blogger away shortly after starting my first blog.

Spide it Grasp it Enjoy it has just posted a tip/hack on how to add categories to your Blogger blog. I’ve not tested it but it looks pretty simple to install and could prove to be a very useful feature. Let me know below how you find it if you give it a go.

    Aloha Darren,

I’m a regular reader of Problogger and linked to it from my blog. I’m new at blogging and learning along the way how to make my blogging both interesting and profitable. I have been working on my blog to add more features like calendar, categories and RSS, XML. My blog is on blogger and it doesn’t come with built in category feature like other blog services like wordpress, typepad, etc. I went to spide.blogspot.com and although I managed to put a permanent link on my blog, I still couldn’t understand how to put my posts in organized category. My Archive list still show ‘dates’ instead of ‘title post’. How do I change that? Thank you and I apologize if my questions are too basic.
    Best,
    Shin

Another method for Categories in Blogger: I add tags to my post that are valid in technorati but also link to del.icio.us. When you bookmark the post to your del.icio.us account, the tags become your categories, & del.icio.us manages them for you. As a side benefit, your posts are also picked up by tag search engines. Other folks are building on this method w/ drop-down menus & such. See Freshblog for the scoop.

    Lovely, informative site, thanks

  4. I am going to be trying some of these tricks on some of my blogs. I am not sure which ones I am going to be trying first though or on which blogs. I may set up a test blog to try them all.

I’ve been working on a Blogger category solution called Caterblogger and would be interested in some more testers. The address is http://www.caterblogger.com.

  8. I’ve done something like it here:

    categories.blogspot.com

The script on the minima template: [link]

The minima template code with the script marked in red.[link]

I hope you can figure it out but do ask if you get stuck. I’m looking for cool ideas for blogger scripts.

  9. Anyone tried the new Blogger Beta? You can sign up at http://beta.blogger.com and create an account… Still very buggy and not ready for prime time, but it does have a new feature called Labels which you can use to categorize posts. Many of the new features seem to aim at getting the general public (non-programmers) to start using Blogger — stuff like drag and drop template editing…

    Here’s what I found:

    And it works:

Maybe not the most intuitive, but he’s got a code generator on his site that you can add your categories (you’ll have to alphabetize them yourself) and it uses blog search to return results. I added a page element for html/javascript and copy pasted a table into my sidebar.
