Blog Tip 12 – Stimulate your Mind

This bloggers block tip is really an extension of the last one on taking breaks – but I guess it’s about what you do on your break that can make it even more powerful for adding to your creativity.

The saying of ‘what goes in comes out’ is true – what you put into your mind has a direct impact upon what comes out of it.

I find that when I’m in a ‘dry patch’ in terms of generating content or coming up with ideas that I’m also often in a dry patch in terms of what I’m doing creatively in the rest of my life.

I purposely listen to music, go to the movies, watching the news, read a variety of books, magazines and newspapers, hang out with creative and innovative people, get out in the vegetable patch, do some photography etc to engage my senses and fill my brain with new ideas. When I do this I generally find that I come up with more interesting ideas and am more productive.

Particularly useful is to do new things – take yourself out of your comfort zone into a completely new experience can shake you out of that numb blocked state.

  1. erm… shouldnt it be number 12?!

  2. One extra benefit of going out to the veggie patch is that actually eating those fresh vegetables will also be stimulating to the mind and your taste buds.

  3. Definetly. The worst thing you can do is sitting all the day at your computer, starting into the monitor and thinking hard what new and exciting article you have to write. When you do new things new analogies come to your mind.

  4. […] Coincidentally, Darren also has a series of 20 or so posts on Bloggers’ Block, or … finding something to blog about. […]

  5. Well, I find that actually sometimes instead of trying to trigger the creative brain back into action it helps me to embrace the one that’s on strike. So when I hit a wall I do my housecleaning. I go through my site and fix all those stupid little things that have been nagging me for days, weeks, months. And guess what – my brain becomes even more numb, more base, more robot-like, and then in retaliation, the creative brain, which has been feeling neglected, screams for attention and I’m back in business.

Going “through” it instead of fighting it has often solved my blocks.

  6. Traditionally human race has been using music and dance. Somewhere along the line came stimulants those nice little organic products that alter our consciousness and therefore stimulate artists like writers.
